Time for a 552 Lite

Posted by: Fraser Hadden on 22 November 2011

Fans of streaming generally only need a couple of inputs, having often ditched vinyl, tuner and tape devices. Is there a general enthusiasm for a 2-3 input pre-amp at 552 level? Presumably the power supply could be smaller/cheaper than the 552PS for a given level of quality.

Or, perhaps even more to the point, a streaming source with variable output sraight into an amp?

Or, slightly circularly, an Ndac with variable out to amp with a couple of analogue inputs.... I love my streamer, but can't do without my vinyl or fm tuner.

.. and an input (with Unity Gain) for the front channels of my AV system, and one for occasional use with the Denon cassette deck. Oh, and a facility to connect my Headline. And it's quite fun to be able to send 2 channel to the AV2 for "surround sound". And the same quality as the NAC 552 ..... and - you could leave out the DAC as I don't need one.

And make sure the signal cables don't snag the rear leg of the FRAIM when I neurotically place it dead centre of the shelf.

Or "Simplify, then add lightness." -

Corner, paint, into. I'm trying (no, really, I AM) to finish it off for good with the next upgrade - apart from source component(s). Speakers - tick. Pre amp - 552 at home for audition over the holiday. The 552 (as is the case with our 252 and come to that, nearly everything else) is overcrowded with inputs for what we are doing at the moment - serving, streaming and internet radio (AKA one input). But I am inclined to "future proof" because for all I know we'll be back on vinyl in the future. Or some other complimentary source component that I haven't heard of yet.

The proposal is elegant and I can see the potential benefits. But if I was locked into a "one to one" solution, however beautiful it sounded, the potential down sides would be forming an orderly queue. Each to our own.
