US backup @Synology ds211 NAS

Posted by: LarsDK on 27 November 2011

sorry for adding to the many NAS related postings lately.

i have unsuccessfully tried to setup a synology ds211 as backup to my unityserve (firmware 1.6b) both connected via cable to my router. i can see the synology server on my home network w synology app on ipad and have created user profiles as outlined in US instructions to best of ability. however, US does not find the synology when i search for shares.

has somebody made this setup work, and if yes, would really appreciate key steps/pointers

would be great if these things were more plug and play....

thx lars

Hi Lars,

I have exactly this set up and it works fine, although  on my own I struggled to make it work.  In the end I got Phil Harris to log in remotely, which had it set up in about 10 minutes - great support, I must say.

I think the key was to fix a static ip address for the NAS, outside of the dhcp range set by the router.

Having set up a share I think you then have to promote it to a store (or is it the other way round ?) and then make sure the store for the back up is below the primary store in the list of stors which the Naim server will display.

Not very difficult if you you know what you' doing, but I'm not afraid to admit that I don't !

Good luck, Paul

How quiet are you gents finding the Synology ds211?  I'm still in the market for a NAS . . . been delaying hoping that hd prices come back down.  I have no opportunity to "hide" the NAS inside a cabinet so I want something pretty quiet.

Hi Bart,
Difficult to be objective here, how quiet is quiet ? Also difficult for me because i live in Malaysia, meaning air conditioners are running all the time. It's certainly quieter than a Drobo which I also have. Synology also has several fan settings. I can't imagine it would be in any intrusive in any home setting.

I find the Synology DS211 about as quiet as you can get for a NAS. I had a netgear readynas duo and it was the loudest thing I've ever heard, similar to jet aircraft really. Good thing about the 211 is if you want it to be even quieter install 2.5" laptop drives instead of 3.5" drives, it supports both.

Thanks all for the replies.  While I am "sold" on this NAS, I was shocked at the prices of hard drives for it.  3.5" drives, "enterprise" versions, 2 tb, are running between $250 - $350 on Amazon.

I'm looking at $1000 US for a NAS with 2 2tb drives   That's not happening for me right now!  I could purchase cd's of most of my hard drive based music, rip them to my UServe, and buy a 1tb external usb drive just for backup, all for a LOT less, and not get into the external share la-dee-da.

Bart,

Your last suggestion seems pretty sensible to me.  The whole NAs experience I have found a pain in the a--e, even though Synology is reputedly among the best interface. The only real benefit I get from it is that the US will make automatic differential backs ups to it, but perhaps you could configure a simple 1'TB or 2TB disk to do the same.

The overall interface experience takes me back a could of decades to the days of MS Dos !
