Dogs and Hi Fi

Posted by: KRM on 02 December 2011

We've got a 12 week old lab. She's not allowed in the lounge which is where the hi fi is. She's absolutely gorgeous, but we don't trust her in there. What do other audiophile dog lovers do, I wonder?

My cairn terrier, visiting my fathers house, scampered into his lounge and lifted his leg on his cherry B&W 804. What taste!  G

You have insurance, right?

I'd rather have a happy dog who feels part of the family. Let her in!!!

Why not drive around blindfolded , I mean you have insurance don't you.

Could be why premiums are so high.

As you may guess I am not a dog lover, if came into my house very unlikely, it might get Jeremy Clarksoned.

For me, puppies get restricted to the kitchen only for many months.  I met my current gf when her dog was already 2 years old, and now that we all live in my place, with my nice mid-century Danish furniture (and of course hifi), it's not an issue as he is well past the chewing furniture stage.

If/when we have to get a new dog, steps will have to be taken as puppies and wooden furniture just don't mix

Thanks folks,

I just wanted to know if there are people out there with grown up dogs that can be trusted in a room full of technology and live cables. We will try to keep her out until the chewing abates.

Worryingly though, we have cherry B&W 804s :-0

Our wee cairnie was just fine with all the cables.  A few scolds and they soon learn!

Are these service dogs or vanity dogs, if service dogs they are doing something useful like loading and unloading the washing machine, handing the money to the checkout person in the supermarket and retrieving stuff from shelves, if not you should keep a Gerbil.

Most dogs are fine. The obvious things to look out for, which tend not to go together, are tails and turntables, as well as happy dogs greeting you when you return home, twirling around and hitting carefully-sited loudspeakers, pushing them out of place or - worse still - knocking them over.

Judicious siting can generally avoid problems with both.

Once dogs know what you want them not to do they are generally very accommodating unless excited - certainly more so than children :-)

This is the usual listening position for my "sub-woofer". He is a 7 year old Staffie-X called Eddie and apart from the occassional sniff at a bass woofer cone he is very well behaved with the hi-fi/cables etc.

I think he enjoys listening to the system, but then again it could just be the warm radiator!!

If you can trust a staffie with a GyroDec and electrostatic speakers then I should be ok :-)

We have a couple of long coat chihuahua's.

They've been with us since about 8 weeks old (brothers, although one litter and (approx) one year apart) - now 4 and 5 years old.

They have never presented any problems with the living room hifi/cables/electricals, etc, although small enough to get in pretty much anywhere they choose!

If I turn the stereo up a little, they tend to leave the room in disgust though

We have a 17 year old cat with no brain cells whatsoever.

I have 2 racks that take all  the hifi +dvd player + the TV sitting on the top shelf. On more than  one occasion she has managed to get stuck behind the racks and tangled up in the cables. A total nightmare getting her out. on the plus side she has never tried to play with the foam grills on the speakers........yet

If you train them right they are never a problem........

I'd never allow any dog to cue up my ARO: they just don't have opposable thumbs.

Our two woofers  (a Black Labrador & a feisty little Border Terrier) have never shown the slightest interest in the Hi-Fi and it never ceases to amaze me how they'll sleep through some monumental volume levels. Still, as a consequence they're both completely immune to noisy fireworks - a few years ago we took our Black Labrador along to a huge firework display & he didn't turn a hair (until someone dropped a hot dog in his vicinity...)

The only hazard is the amount of dog hair and dust they generate, plus the Lab likes to stand alongside the Fraim & have a good shake when he's wet, leaving little spots on the Naim units. A particular pain on the fronts of the 500s where it settles into the grooves.

The Terrier, when a puppy, would pee on the floor whenever J.N. (of this forum) came to visit. I'm even now uncertain about what the dog was commenting on.

On second thoughts, they're a real pain & I think I'll have them shot.

+1

A kennel in the back garden should be fine, after all you wouldn't let a cat near the hi-fi, would you?

All the best, WC Fields

If I had to choose between the stereo and the dog, the dog would come first. And believe me I love the stereo. But flesh and blood always comes first in my book.
