Can I use a Mac mini instead of a UnitiServe?

Posted by: KingKong on 03 December 2011

I am so new at this, not a computer expert either. Had a taste of the streaming Naim audio, very

impressed. My question is Can I use a mini as a streaming server, it would be cheaper than

a UnitiServe. I realize I have to get a optical disc drive to rip CDs, but with 500G, can this be

a good alternative?

Or you could get the Mini to share the CD/DVD Drive of another computer (via BlueTooth) and store the rip in the Mini's HD - may not be the quickest transfer.....

Even better....

Neil,

I'm mac-centric, so that is another reason a mac mini is appealing; I understand how it thinks. iPhone etc devices all present here, so no issue with a controller. It would be neat if QuteControl worked on the i-devices. I just don't understand why the remote that comes with the UQ has volume buttons that are useless. It makes no sense, as the remote is ostensibly there to let the user control the UQ. A mystery to me.

On the CD ripping, my intent is to rip CD's, and buy digital files, on my iMac, and then add them to the iTunes library on the mini. I'll just duplicate the iTunes library as well as back up to another external hard drive.

Have you tried resetting the remote? There was a thread about it somewhere recently.....

Just found it

The new Mac Mini sounds like a great option for me too.

But doesn't it get quite pricey when you go for the 250 GB SDD + 750 GB HD option?

Neil,

Thanks for hanging around your computer on a Saturday (morning here). Yes, I did see that thread and I have tried it. lt did not work, but I also did not get the display behavior they described in this thread;

Does anybody else have a 2010 UQ where the remote does control the volume?

Thanks muchly,

Damon,

Stupid question I guess but.... How do you control the volume now if the remote doesn't work?

Would a factory reset do it?

New firmware update available from Naim website.

Posted on: 17 December 2011 by Damon

pcs,

Not a stupid question at all; n-Stream app lets me pick a maximum volume in the settings/ setup screen, and then there is the usual volume slider when a song is playing. So there is a work around, it is just something that I should not have to do, obviously.

I have mentioned that I bought the UQ used, so I have not bothered the dealer. The seller told me that it had always been this way; he was the original owner. So, either it is a factory flaw, or it was not working when I bought it. Or, possibly, there is some other requirement to make it work. Finally, I may have some setting set incorrectly, but I have spent solid time going over the manual. So, who knows.

Neil

I did look at the Naim site for a firmware update, but I could not find it. I will look again.

Thanks for staying in touch.

I thought you could control uq volume from its logoon the device?

garyi,

Oh, the logo on the device. You are correct; sort of. At least in regard to my UQ. Yes, I can fuss with the logo and get the volume to go up or down. It seems to be the same as the 'max volume' setting in 'set up' on the n-Stream app. But pressing the logo is not at all acceptable. Sometimes the  volume goes up, and sometimes it goes down. It only took a few moments of fussing before I realized that this logo-button would never be adequate as an everyday control.

But you are correct in hoping, I think, that the logo button would work. Alas, no.

Damon,

nStream is the Naim application for i-devices, not QuteControl. QuteControl is for mac desktop. If you wish to convert your i-phone/pad to a universal remote control, there are a number of learning remote control applications available for them. The remote which came with my UQ is controlling the volume with no problem.

My UQ also has no problems with the remote.

I understand the difference btw n-Stream and QuteControl. The remote which came with your UQ works to contol volume. Mine does not. From reading other posts, it appears that I am not the only person with a non-functioning factory, hand-held Naim remote.
