Forum speed - Is it just me?
Posted by: Mountain Goat on 04 December 2011
I am getting very frustrated with the poor speed of this website. I have a broadband connection speed of nearly 3Mb and every other website I visit provides virtually instantaneous response.
I was using IE9 and noted Richard's comments re: checking Java enabled and suggestion of using Chrome. Yesterday I switched to Chrome and noticed even quicker page load times on all my usual haunts but the Naim forum continues to run really slowly, keeps hanging, and I often have to refresh the brower to get a full page load.
I am using XP on a 4 year old laptop with an Intel Centrino duo processor running at 1.7MHz and 4Gb RAM.
I cant believe that everyone is experiencing these kinds of delay - has anyone got any ideas what I can do?
Thanks
I have had the same problem for a few weeks now.

Me too.... eversince hoop.la buggered things up here it takes ages to waiting for page loading
Also, all the larger size photo's are distorted by getting stretched (elongated) up and downwards, squeezed into a narrow band where the written area is contained although recently the written area is sometimes a mile wide one has to keep using the slider to read it left to right.
All the other sites i visit work fast and fine!

Running perfectly here on Vista with Firefox and on another machine with Win & and Firefox. Debs, what browser are you sing and how is it set? i.e. is it in compatibility mode? Do you have the same issue if you switch to another browser?
Firefox with Win 7 and no problems (well with speed anyway!)

Richard, Thanks for reply...
i'm using windoze XP pro with a Pentium 4 chip CPU 3.20GHz with 1.00 GB of RAM
i've just upgraded to IE8 ...don't know what i was using before, 6 i think
the compatibility switch nicely sorted out the photo pictures, but the new presentation is very clitchy - not fully downloading and the quote-reply buttons are missing.
i see a note under the naim community banner which advises...
Your browser is unsupported. Please upgrade to a modern browser:
Firefox · Safari · Google Chrome Internet Explorer 8/9
Stange... i've just upgraded to the Explorer 8 which seems to have downloaded okay
Perhaps i need to download it again... or turn my puter off and on again.
Debs
Debs the problem is almost certainly caused by a lack of memory. 1GB is nowhere near enough now. Another gig or two would be a worthwhile upgrade unless you plan to upgrade your PC.

What !? ...but when purchased in 1912 they said it was far too silly powerful for home use, and even more so than the one used on the Titanic.
i've just ran a PC Cleaner program, and it's highlighted 5978 faults...
i have that sinking feeling : (
Debs
Debs, I find IE can be a problem with some sites. It's one of the reasons I decided to change to Firefox.
If you're running on 1GB of memory then you might find trying a less memory hogging browser will help all round.
Generally the forum loads at super speed, but occasionally it is really slow and even stops with "internal server error" what ever that is. Yes I know it's an error in the internal server, thanks Guy
I think one needs windoze 7 to upgrade to explorer 8/9
my puter has XP pro... and that's only the tip of the iceburg.
i've just had my troubled registory corrected...
Gosh! it was almost as corrupted as the Tory Government!
...i will seek advice about Firefox from someone i know is expert.
She'll probably tell me to buy a mac : )
Debs
Debs, however you decide to proceed you'll need more memory unless you're happy with the most basic level of performance. Even then it's not enough.
May I ask what sort of firewall, antivirus and antispyware protection you have? This should have been the first question. Sorry.
Tom, my pc works just fine everywhere except here in hooplaland.
It needed a good system cleaning and some fixing too but seems to be working better, quieter and quicker now.
However, i've had problems with explorer8, Google Chrome, and Firefox, they all download okay but don't work properly. So i'm back on explorer[?] for time being.
The security isn't the problem, in the system scan it was okay... about the only thing that was okay though
Debs
No speed problems here. However, on a related theme....
Debs, something I've noticed before when anyone posts long URLs, the
"~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"
you used to quote Tom has made everyone's posts cover a little more of the screen - almost full width on Safari / iPod.
Please can you do the same (only slightly longer) on every page of every thread? Thanks, CC

what like this do you mean? : )
just downloaded explorer8 (all over again) ...and again it downloaded no problem.
but the naim header still says my browser is unsupported!
but it's a bit quicker now, the photo's look okay too, and the presentation of the writing fits back into that narrow band of toilet roll strip fashion from hoop.la.la.la
Chief,
my reply/quote buttons have disappeared now so I use the “~~~~” to clarify who says what from what I’m saying - if you know what I mean.
Btw - very nice seasonal photo you have in your profile... one of your goodself?
it will probably get a lot of these blokes here all excited ; )

Debs,
Have you read the sticky re IE?
It states:
"A few members have reported having strange browser related issues, specifically related to Internet Explorer. While IE7 and earlier is not officially supported (recommended to use IE8 or above, Firefox or Chrome), later version of IE8 can still give issues if "compatibility mode" is selected in your browser options. It is recommended you uncheck the "compatibility mode" option for best performance.
Thanks, Richard"
I was using IE9 ..

Doing that has got me the quote/reply buttons back,
and not to mention the 'Graemlins'
thanks, Tom - your a star!
Also my pc is firing on all four again now, no more registry errors or tory party policy hardrive.
Debs
My work here is done.
Now all you need is another gig or two and you'll be flying
