Power supply

Hi.
Just waiting to take delivery of my new ndx unit. Thing is , does anyone recommend the upgrade of the seperate power supply. It's a big cost , and I'm not sure I'm gonna notice the return !

Firstly, enjoy your new NDX which will sound great on its own! Don't feel pressurised into upgrading something before you have actually got it and listened to it.

Thereafter, if you feel tempted to go further, the best course of action is to get a dem at your dealer or ask him if you can borrow a ps to try at home. However, I went to the Summer Sounds streaming events and this is exactly what Naim demonstrated.

Basically, an additional ps will do what it always does on all Naim gear (more space, better timing and separation, more control)  but whether it proves sufficiently better for you to part with your cash is your personal opinion and choice.

The  new XP5 XS ps, an XPS2,( but not the Olive XPS) and/ or the 555ps can be used. Normally adding a ps to the NDX works on the DAC stage but if you have a separate DAC you can still use a ps to power just the streaming side of the NDX.

I use a 555ps on the Ndac but added an XPS2 to my NDX. Even though it is only powering the streaming side the XPS made worthwhile improvements. My Naim contacts do not feel a 555ps is needed on the NDX if it is only used to power the streaming side.

Of course it also depends on the rest of the system so in some cases it might be worth spending the money elsewhere e.g.hicap or supercap on the preamp before adding a ps to the NDX. Again the best way is to hear the options at your dealer or get a home demo. Don't forget you can also consider Powerlines as a cost effective upgrade.

However, the simple answer to your question, based on my experience, is that an additional ps improves the NDX but you may well be very happy with it as it comes,

Believe me, you will notice the difference. Even my mum noticed the addition of a second HiCap to mine.

Wise words. My mum could always hear things none of my bothers or I  could. Trust your mum's ear.

Best

Hi Allen,

Interesting post.

I have an NDAC with 555PS and NDX with XPS2 on it. I have tried 555PS on NDX and XPS2 on NDAC and preferred option 1.

I also concur with Graham that there's no need for 555PS all round (NDAC & NDX).

Suffice to say it's interesting on yours and others take on this.

Keep em coming!

Hi guys.

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I'm gonna wait till the ndx arrives , and give it a while over the holiday.

Thanks again

Hi Dustysox

I wasn't  aware you had the full out-boarded NDX & nDAC, nice ......

I agree, 555PS on both machines would be just a little OTT   I will try the XP5 XS on the dig out of the NDX, and 555PS back on the nDAC as soon as my dealer can get his unit.

Hi Allen.

Yup bit over the top but I adore what it does. Just added NAP 500 & S600's. This now "completes me"!!

Naim sure makes beautiful music/sounds especially when one adds power supplies.....see what I did there!!

One hell of a system there. Well done you.

Hi Allen & Harry,

Thank you for your kind words.

Life sure is hectic at the moment and with this in mind I've not had a chance to update profile etc. Hopefully over the Christmas I will get some time to take some pictures and post.

System as it stands

555 & PS

500 & PS

NDX & XPS

NDAC & 555 PS

Logitech Transporter (Spotify listening/part playlists)

My old Oppo 970H for SACD/DVD Audio.

All Fraimed & all with powerlines, Hi Line/DC1 (BNC)

S600's.

Yes, it's a lot of boxes. But on a Saturday evening with the lights dimmed playing some fine music...O my god. Wonerful.

All sounds wonderful. I didn't realise music could sound so good. Yes, it has cost a lot of money, but if I get to enjoy it as I do now every day as I have for the last two years for the next twenty years then (in my head) it would have been a worth while experience.

For me, (and the only way to find out is a home dem) is what Naim power supplies bring to the "party".

To hear is to believe, and for me Naim deliver in every sense of the word.
