Playback of Naim library on computer?

Posted by: aysil on 11 December 2011

My Naim server (HDX) is in my music room. Occasionally, I would like to listen to music from this CD collection when I am working on my computer in my office room. I just want to use the local sound of the PC, without any additional devices. I tried to add the HDX folders on the network to the libraries of both WMP and iTunes. In both cases, I see all the tracks of all the rips on one single album called "Unknown Album". Any suggestions for integrating my Naim library to the library of any media player on my computer, with all album names and album coverart etc? Alternatively, is there a way of using the computer as UPnP stream client?

Simon, this is not exactly true, isn't it? Naim for Naim? Naim rip for Naim server, yes. However any UPnP control point and any UPnP stream player is able to interoperate with Naim server. That means you can play your Naim rips on any Linn player, or on the Ayon Network Player, as I am doing now, or any UPnP stream client. Media players like Foobar, Twonky Manager, XBMC, and even WMP12 are able to connect to Naim server. I have a problem with JRiver which I will explain again in the next post.

The only disadvantage remains that you have to have your Naim device where your Naim server is installed (HDX or UServe) turned on and running, even if your library is on a separate NAS etc. Therefore, it would be nice if Naim released its server software and provided support. I also share your call for options to add tags to its wav files for more flexibility. I just wanted to emphasize that your complaint about lack of interoperability does not cover the player side, but covers only the server side (which, according to David in this thread, lacks an established standard).

Aysel, I see your point. I was coming more from the WAV meta data angle and hte means of recovering the metadata for a particular WAVE file irrespective of hether its being streamed etc.

How does it not work?  What isn't working?

It may be as simple as ticking a box in MC settings somewhere.

I assume you are running ALL of the DLNA services?

Patrick,

I will try to explain again.

Yes, all DLNA services are active. JRiver can connect to all servers on my network (Asset, Twonky, WMP etc.) but not to Naim server. When I try to connect to Naim server, I get the message "This server is not compatible, because it does not support search"

I have studied all settings, but couldn't find anything related to this, on JRiver version 15, 16, and 17 beta. I would be glad if you could provide a solution

How are you connecting?  What are you using for a control point?

Have you tried usingPlugplayer with HDX as server and J River as renderer?

I don't use Plugplayer, but I used many different control points with JRiver as renderer, and it works; but this is not my problem

I wish to use JRiver as the control point, because I like the UI. ...and it won't connect to Naim server.
