Kinsky Setup

Posted by: mk07 on 12 December 2011

Hi,

I have problems using Kinsky Desktop or Ipad version. It stops after playing the first song in the list.

Only if i tap on the next song, it will start to play, but again only this one song. n-stream is no option, cause it even does not offer to create a queuing list.

Also got some issue with my ReadyNas Duo. Some folders are not shown and also some tracks are missing.

Could not find any setup manual for NAS Drives.

I found answers to such questions about Kinsky in the Development section of Linn forums.

mk07,

I think this is happening to you because the control point is not told by the renderer that the song has ended.  This is a typical issue with servers, renderers and control points being made by different people.

I would guess if you can use a server/renderer that has a dedicated remote/control app, you will fare better.

Basically, Kinsky is not talking to your renderer.

Thanks for reply,

@Aysil :  I forgot to mention, that I'm using UnitiServe with NDX - I think you already were successful with this setup and using Kinsky, right? Do you know any special configurations?

Michael

I have replied to your post on the Linn forum so will not repeat here.

Regarding the problem of folders and tracks not being visible, this is a problem with the ReadyNAS UPnP server not making these available for selection. This is usually due to tagging issues. How or when is the NAS set-up to re-scan the folders?

Peter,

don't remember now, I will check it when I'm home tonight, but it's maybe the right hint:

2 days ago I created a folder with some Highres-files and it was not found for streaming.

When I quick checked yesterday it could see the folder (but could not play the files anyway- this must be another issue) . So left over is the Kinsky issue.

thx

Remember that the NDX will play Hi-Res files up to 24/96 (assuming it is not fitted with the new streaming boards); files above this size will not play.

I think you said you have the DUO, if it is the same as mine, an NVX, it can be set only to rescan when initiated manually. I believe this is the preferred setting as it prevents interruption of music due to a scheduled re-scan.

The trick is to remember to re-scan each time you add music or make alterations to any tags.

It's a brandnew one, so should be capable of playing 24/192.

Just checked settings in the ReadyNas setup and yes, one have to scan manually after any changes.

Peter, you're so helpful, so I'd like to ask some general question. How is the music and all other data on your NAS organized - I'm not very deeep into the theory and I'm afraid I made some mistakes by organizing my data on the NAS. I started with UnitiServe and Arcam DAC. Music was in the media Share of the NAS where also my photos and videos were located. Everytime I changed something in this share the UnitiServe rescanned the database for at least one hour. So I moved the music to a new created Music Share and things went ok. But with NDX when I try to navigate through the folders on NAS it behaves slow, sometimes n-stream crashes. Is there any advice how to setup the shares?

thx

Hi Michael

OK I will have a go, I apologise now in case I go over things you know.

I use DbPoweramp to rip our music directly to the NAS, this is stored in the ‘media/music’ folder under Artist/Album format. If you wish to use the ReadyNAS UPnP server to deliver music to your NDX, this is the folder you should use.

If you still have a UnitiServe however, you would not use this folder (media/music) but create a new share specifically and exclusively for use by the Userve. This folder would be created at the root of the NAS and should I think have the word ‘Music’ in it’s name, so ‘Music-UnitiServe’ or similar. My understanding is that only the UnitiServe should add music to this folder, I do not have a Naim server so others may correct me if I am wrong. I would suggest that when setting up the new folder, setting the same permissions as are set for the ‘media’ folder would be reasonable.

You will then need another folder, set-up as above, in which to store your Hi-Res Music files and/or any music you may have that was not ripped by the Userve. You would need also to point the Userve at this folder to make it available for streaming by the Userve.

I would suggest that you do not be tempted to use the ‘media/music’ folder for streaming via the Userve when the UPnP server on the ReadyNAS is switched on. I found that this was the cause of degraded sound when I effectively had two UPnP servers using the same files. I have no idea why this should be the case.

As to the NDX navigation being slow, I wonder how you have connected the various units together, all wired, all wireless or a combination. Naim recommends that only one item be connected via wireless. So, Userve, Nas wired connection, wireless to NDX for example. All items wired are of course preferred if possible.

Not sure how much use this may be, but may help.

One further thought is the Duo manual that can be downloaded from here should you not have found it already.

Hi Peter,

thanks for the detailed description. I will go through it and try to improve my system.

I have all components wire-connected. Yesterday I tried to browse through my old mp3-fiels, which have gathered the last couple of years (more than 100Gig) and I even could not go into the folders, something blocked. Looks like I've made a lot of missettings in my setup.

NDX playing from UServe is working great.

But maybe I was too green when I switched to streaming. I thought putting my mp3s to the NAS and connecting it to the NDX will do it - now I have the hard way to learn all the things aside this road.

Thanks again and if I may, I will get back to your experience, when I'm not succesful.

Michael…..Give it ago and come back if you need to. There is no reason why you should not be able to stream your mp3 files, it can only be settings that need tweaking.

Good luck.

Peter
