Software 3.9 update for NDX

Posted by: caftan on 16 December 2011

Had anyone tried on your NDX?
Posted on: 16 December 2011 by marcobb

Yes, i already upgraded, it is easy but i saw the panel shown DSP upgrade as upgrade moment, any sound quality improved ???

Not yet. I downloaded it but I was put off by the method of connection from the laptop to the NDX. It looks like I need an RS232 cable, so a trip to Maplins is required or I get the dealer to do it when I get the new board. the supplied blurb has some nice screen shots but was clearly written by the developer without intervention from customer facing staff.

We're not told what the patch gives us so if it isn't easy, I'll probably leave it for now. I haven't bothered with the DAC patch as the only issue I experience there is faint clicks when some iPads when connected to the USB.

Hi, yes am using the later software. Haven't noticed any sound quality changes, but I use the NDX to drive the nDAC. I use WAV files, yet to try FLACs.
However I get no crashes now,  I get the progress bar in Nstream, and I get better web radio function with radio art and accurate bandwidth and codec description.
The upgrade process is really straightforward. Imstructioms well written and clearly describe the steps involved.  Make sure you use wired Ethernet and not wireless for the upgrade processes. Both your upgrade laptop and ndx need to be on the LAN with wired Ethernet and a simple cheap (a few quid from ebay etc) USB to RS 232 adapter between the laptop and NDX.

Thought I would give it a try until I read - "Requires PC running Windows 7/Vista/XP" - so no option for Apple users. Great. Will have to wait until I get the board upgrade

This update procedure illustrates why Naim need to spend more on product update procedures and facilities. They clearly have not provided facilities in any of their internet attached products to do over the web updates. It should be possible to do this sort of update over the web as it is with other products.

Bought a USB to RS 232 lead but I can't plug the proxy thing in because there are screws either side of the socket on the lead and the NDX which can't be removed. God a hate computers!

Not quite as simple as my old DS player then.

I can't see anything in the stickies - where is this info on the update ?

Scillyisles, interesting point, however I am not sure I'd trust it to be updated by or over the web. I prefer Naim's approach where you have total control. Arguably the rs232 is not so common as a consumer interface anymore, but it is extremely robust and reliable. I have some other devices now such as professional radios and my car that can be upgraded by USB memory stick. That could be a future option perhaps.

James, try the main Naim site under latest news.....

Just upgraded to version 3.9. All went smoothly and certainly quicker than some of the betas ;-)

KRM, I tried to do a similar update on my Uniti (beta version) and found out that the RS232 cable I bought online wouldn't fit because of protruding screws too. I have had to buy a second one but I have been told by Naim that this one is good for the job. If anyone needs an RS232 then, use this.

It may be robust, as SinS says, but I do wonder why Naim opted for the RS232 connection, and didn't use USB from the getgo? Thanks!

My original usb serial adaptor seems to have died, so went out to maplin to buy a new one. It too had the protruding sockets so didnt fit, fortunately I had a serial extension lead which I could connect between.

At first the update software didnt see the untiqute, but then read that the pc needed to be wired to the network. I rebooted everything and the update seemed to work ok until the last bit where it just hung waiting for the unitiqute to reboot. After about 15 mins waiting I figured something wasnt right and just rebooted the machine manually. All seems ok.

It appeared during the update it firstly update some ARM software using the serial link, but then the actual firmware update via ethernet. Does that mean subsequent updates will not need a serial link, which would of course be better?

I like the progress bar. Is it possible to turn off the clock though?

How do you upgrade without a laptop?

Posted on: 17 December 2011 by badlyread

Press the 'spanner' (settings) on your remote and find 'Clock and Alarm'. You can play around with it there.

Graham, if you don't have a laptop or PC I suggest calling your dealer. They should be able to do it for you in about 10 mins if you take your unit to them.

Actually it is under Settings>Front Display (turning the clock off). Opps.

I wrenched the protruding screws off with pliers. The update didn't work as it couldn't recognise the NDX. I will try again tomorrow. Grrr...!

Any issue if i didn't connect wired on the laptop as upgrade process? Still work ???
Posted on: 18 December 2011 by KRM
I've killed the NDX! I returned it to factory setings, as Allen suggested, and the front screen now says Digital 1 No Signal. NStream says it's not connected. Help!

Digital 1 is the default start location. Have you tried using the front panel to go to other inputs?

You may need to set up again from scratch.
Posted on: 18 December 2011 by KRM
Panic over. I simply had to choose the UPNP input on the remote to make it work. I also realised I hadn't installed the drivers for the new lead. Having done all this the net result is..."Responses from the device are unrecognised". Not impressed.

If you have a USB stick, try that to see if the system plays music. If it does, restart everything to see if that helps your situation.
Posted on: 18 December 2011 by KRM
Done it!
Posted on: 18 December 2011 by caftan
Guys, it does seems like a chore for me if there is no noticeable improvement in sound quality.

I truly do not understand why Mac users are flagrantly negelected. Same with the UnitiServe. Totally not impressed. Bought Serve and NDX. Sorry I did. NAIM is clearly a windows company and totally not Mac. Why can't you do an updrage thru the internet? Why do customers have to burn there own CD? And the trouble it takes. Clearly unbelievable.
