Software 3.9 update for NDX
Posted by: caftan on 16 December 2011
Thanks Damon
I'll wait for the h/w upgrade - as you say the UQ is very good as it came - in fact it is great.
All the best, Guy
Well the 3.9 update has left my Qute unusable...
John,
Really sorry to hear about the update disaster. I had some bewildering network grief last night, so I know how exasperating this can be. I'll just leave it alone for now.
Richwleeds; interesting news. Airplay might be a nice addition. Depending on my urges, I may simply wait and do a hardware & software upgrade then. Or, have the dealer do it... yes, let them do it.....
I can't speak for the Qute but I can the NDX. When I was trying an early beta my upgrade process crashed and left the NDX in update mode. I power cycled the NDX, it wouldnt function correctly, but I could restart the upgrade process and all subsequently became ok after a couple of attempts. The RS232 link bypasses the initial reliance on the network which is the big advantage to using it.
Therefore I recommend you get a proper RS232 interface and try and re run the update.

Hi Simon.
I bought a "proper" USB to Serial cable (Prolific chipset) this afternoon and re-ran the update program.
As you described, the update then ran through correctly (even though the Qute had previously had multiple failed uploads and been switched on and off a few times while the screen stated "do not switch off").
For anyone else considering updating their own, don't be put off by my experience. Just make sure to buy a decent USB to Serial cable (ca. £10-15) and avoid the £5 ones on eBay. The Qute and process itself seemed very resilient.
Cheers,
John

You need to download a uPnP server to your Mac. I would suggest Yazsoft's Playback (I have a mac and SuperUniti). Installl to your mac. The NDX will then see it and away you go. Easy.

I notice that Naim recommend this USB to RS232 adapter

I hope posting this link is OK.
Everything is working perfectly.
I have finally reset the factory defaults as mentioned in Allens post, and my clock has suddenly started dimming after 10 seconds (before I just switched it off because it was a bit bright). Not sure if its made any other differences, so definitely worth while doing a factory reset if you machine hangs during the update process.
Hi, could anyone please describe the updated functions a bit closer. Is it possible to navigate through a song now by using the progress bar or does it just show the song progress? And is it possible to pause a podcast now and navigate through it?
Thanks,
Oliver
The update process wasn't straight forward for me: it couldn't find my Uniti's IP address, so I had to switch it off and on a few times; the update hung on the reboot; and it erased the static IP settings I used previously. But after going through the factory reset, it seems to be working fine, and I no longer need a static IP. My clock isn't dimming, however. Is it supposed to on the Uniti?
I like the fact that the 3.9 software now remembers where you were if you switch between functions on the Uniti. Using the remote, going from UPnP to radio and back, for example, means you don't lose the last track you played. Thanks!

Try putting it on mute. My Uniti dims when I put it to sleep at night (analogue input + mute). Otherwise it stays bright when in use.
Anyone know if the RS232 cable is supposed to be a straight through cable or crossed? It can't find a reference in the documentation it just says an RS232 cable.
You need a computer to modem cable rather than a null modem cable. I used one that came with my old Hayes modem and that worked fine.

Richard......thanks, tried a few different cables and none of them work. I'll have to get the exact pin out from Naim
Naim saying use an RS232 cable isn't a great help to be honest, could do with some more info including whether the COM port has to be configured in any specific way. Can't understand why they don't just opt for a method similar to the DAC updates - shove it on a USB stick and reload!
Just updated my NDX. It was a fairly painless process and I now have a track progress bar and time remaining. Happy days.
I ordered the cable from the retailer suggested by Naim and I was with me in 2 days, even over Xmas - good going.
I use Win7 x64 and the driver was downloaded as soon as I plugged in the USB end.
I used an apple USB extension cable from my main PC to the NDX (I cut a hole through the wall from my study to my lounge and use cables straight through the hole - which has a nice surround with brushes and makes it easy to connect my kit up). Although it was an Apple extension that cable was crap. I had to replace it with my Apple keyboard USB extension, which worked straight away!
It gives a choice of Comms ports, use Com3.
All seems fine now.
