What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

It's Christmas, which means it's time to dig out various Messiahs.  This is my favourite on CD.  It means I can listen while doing other stuff around the house and not have to worry about the arm reaching the end of the side while I'm busy elsewhere.

.............because it was released 38 years ago and I've only just really taken time out to buy & listen to it! (Never a big Genesis fan) I love it! Some serious catching up to do!

Wagner's Tannhäuser, my favorite from Solti's Wagner series and one of the few really good Tannhäusers on record. The Vienna Philharmonic and chorus are on stunning form and Decca's SoundScape technology was used to more modest and better effect here than for Solti's Ring. The singers are very good, especially considering that the 70s were not a great time for Wagner singing. Solti once again corrects his image of a vertical, driven conductor.

American gothic / Alt country - name it what you will, but do listen to the duet between Johnny Dowd and Maggie Brown - "First there was..."

On the Black Stuff!!  Saw that someone else was listening on the previous thread so I pulled out my copy from the 80's.  Been listening since 5 AM.  Great music and well recorded right down to the buzz of the guitar amps!

Happy New Year

On Vinyl. Been shopping today for some Vinyl and bought quite a bit secondhand. One of my favourite bands of my younger days, always remember seeing them at Bournemouth Winter Gardens with some very good friends of mine. Great night. Gary Moore was on guitar that night.

On Vinyl. Been after this for a while on Vinyl really happy to get this and in excellent condition. Production on this is excellent never heard it like this before I also have a remastered CD of this. This is very much better, original pressing.

on vinyl;

one of the first LP I ever bought;

I really like the level of raw energy of that recording

My US flexi-vinyl copy.  A rare survivor from my school days, still sounding pretty good despite the odd scratch here and there.  I bought the remastered CD and find it pretty much unbearable to listen to.  Stick with the earlier RCA issue, if you can find it.

Richard,

I will agree with you on the remastered CDs.
