What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Really enjoying this understated sax/drums/bass trio recording.

I appear to be in a very 'proggy' groove at present

& finally for tonight - perhaps not the best album before bed.

Perfect to go with the balmy weather and its 67F temperatures.

A little cross-section of many of the who's who in the piano world.  I did have the opportunity to buy these one by one when they were coming out.  One of the biggest mistakes I've made in not buying these.

Hi Debs

Did you see the documentary on BBC4 about her and her husband (John Heisman) coping with her Parkinson'd disease. My partner, who's mother has Parkinson's too, thought it was the best documentary on coping with it she had seen. probably still on I-player.

Having a bit of a binge on Tangerine Dream 'Tangerine Tree & Leaves' recordings.

I decided to listen to the four cathedral concerts from 74/5. After the concert at Reims in 1974, where they played alongside Nico, the Catholic church was so displeased with the action of their fans, 6000 people had been packed into a space that should only hold 2000, so they could not reach the toilets, huddled together for warmth, and smoked a few joints during the show, that the cathedral had to be re-consecrated and Tangerine Dream, although not Nico, were banned from ever playing on holy Catholic ground again.

The Anglican church in the UK was so impressed that the band had caused such displeasure to the Catholic church, that they were invited to play three UK cathedrals the following year.

Reims in from the radio broadcast, and excellent quality, the other three are OK, but not great audience recordings. Interesting to listen to though, mostly as background music.

Cheer up, Doug. This collection consists of a truly staggering amount of great recordings by many fine pianists (many no longer well known), but the producers made a couple of doubtful decisions, which for me at least significantly downgrades the value of this set. Is André Previn really one of the 20th century greatest pianists? Why were Tatiana Nikolaeva, Annie Fischer and Ivo Pogorelich excluded? (actually, apparently Pogorelich is said to have blocked his inclusion as he insisted to be represented by Chopin, who the producers felt was already overrepresented - good reason?).

Cheers,

EJ
