What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi reubs, No, other than a couple of tracks, mostly everything Night Slugs has passed me by, though I did download this mix a while ago: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1254

Don't know about you, but I find that kind of hard to listen to? Anyhow, found a stream of this after reading your post...

Much easier on the ears.  : ) Thanks.

Great live album. DS at their peak. Just a shame there's no Sultans of Swing

The US 45rpm Hoffmann mastered issue is superb.

One of my favourite "charity shop" purchases of last year. Bluesy rock mix.

Still this is by far my favourite 6th.

It's the record I pull out when I want to feel self pity.

Thibaudet can be hit-or-miss, but he excels in the music by Ravel and Debussy. Plenty of good pianists have recorded chunks or complete works of both composers but Thibaudet is like nobody else. I'm slowly working my way through other Ravel sets, this year I hope to add Hewitt and Osborne to the list, but so far, Thibaudet is my favorite.

EJ

EJ,

Hard to believe he's better than Gieseking's Debussy tho?

I think he's got the *voice from the past* thing down.

Do you have this disc?

He's doing Bill Evans cover and surprisingly pretty good!

Encourraged, I went to see him doing Ravel's Piano Concerto for the Left Hand.

He was so wooden what a let down! :x

Continuing on the ambient mode above. This one has more of an edge with glitchy overtones.

Kuma,

Technically he is much better than Gieseking but that's probably not what you meant Incomparable, really, there are so many ways to play this music. Not very familiar with Gieseking, I've never had the opportunity to listen to him on my own rig but I'd worry that the sound quality is below pleasure level for repeated listening.

I heard Thibaudet live once, in Amsterdam, 1996 in a solo programme, forgot what he played but I recall it as a great evening - still have an enthusiastic autograph on the Ravel disc.

Cheers,

You a City fan too then Chief? Great result last night for the blue side of the city. Liam is is currently a better fashion designer than rock star.  Noely G's album wasn't too bad though, especially What a Life which was supposedly inspired by Rhythm is Rhythm's Strings of Life...who knew he listened to classic Detroit techno?

On a side note, the Night Slugs compilation album is a good place to start with that label as it has classics from Bok Bok and Girl Unit and verily it does bump...

Pink Floyd 'Pulse' especially track 10, simply stunning!
