What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

You a City fan too then Chief? Great result last night for the blue side of the city. Liam is is currently a better fashion designer than rock star.  Noely G's album wasn't too bad though, especially What a Life which was supposedly inspired by Rhythm is Rhythm's Strings of Life...who knew he listened to classic Detroit techno?

On a side note, the Night Slugs compilation album is a good place to start with that label as it has classics from Bok Bok and Girl Unit and verily it does bump...

Nope, but I seem to remember cheering on Barça in their recent CL Final victories over United like only a Liverpool fan can. Everyone in Manchester seems to support City, so I figured I'd be ok with you. : )

I still love Liam (not seen any Pretty Green here though) but I've never been too fond of his bro. I saw Noel's line about Rhythim is Rhythim and going to the Haçienda all the time in his recent "Dance music's easy - anyone can do it" interview. Hmmm.... yeah. Like Liam, always good for a quote, I suppose.

Will have to look up some more Night Slugs.

EJ,

At that level, all concert pianists should have enough technical ability to play the piece.

You are right in that I am not that interested in technical side of things but how they communicate the feeling is what matters.

I don't think Tibaudet is one of those *robot* piano player but as you said he is indeed hit and miss.

p.S. there are a set of EMI recording Gieseking has done just before his death. the performance might be slighlty on a safe side but if there are EMI Statement redo, I bet the sound quality is pretty good.

But yeah.. anything before that, the sound quality isn't very good as most of them are taken down from 78s.

Kuma,

I'll meet you halfway, I've put Gieseking's 50s recordings of the préludes I & II in the basket. On sound: I'm not interested in sound quality per se, but the beauty of the instrument is half the pleasure so I am partial to good recordings, particularly with piano. And Thibaudet's recorded sound is beautiful. It lacks a bit in the bass (could be the playing), but makes up for it in clarity - it's not often you can hear the effect of the middle pedal so clearly.

Cheers,

EJ

The US 45rpm Hoffmann mastered issue is superb.

The WG version of the same disc is supposedly even better sounding.

David,

Joe kicked off the show with Moonage Daydream played and sung live by Amy LaVere.

The hairs were standing up on the back of my neck.

Wonderful.

Bloody fantastic.

The best song i have heard this year.

I will be checking out more of her music for sure.

I would highly recommend the debut album from this Leeds based seven piece ensemble.

I'm not sure what genre to file this one under. It has elements of dubstep (do not be put off) with jazz like smoky horn sections. Ruby Wood supplies the honeyed, sultry vocals, which she delivers with panache.

IMO an absolute corker.

Cheers

A new purchase today. Bringing back memories of a great show in Vegas in 2010!

It's 1981. Ian Botham saves the day, Adam Ant rules the charts, I underperform in the sack race.

Meanwhile, Ralf, Florian, Karl, and Wolfgang are busy in Dusseldorf, inventing the future of music, the internet, and well, everything:

It's more fun to compute.

Chief,

I was doing well Batting for my village team that afternoon.

We all got called in to watch the last three or four overs.

I went back out and got court on the second ball.

It didnt matter though.

England/Botham won.

We won that game and we won  the beer match.

What a day and night that was.

Good old days.

Stu.
