What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

This is really good - a beautiful combination of well thought through, detailed, articulate but also powerful and sweeping music making. Zimerman really should be thinking about recording the remaining two.

Cheers,

EJ

Yes Tony - that was indeed what I was listening to the other night and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who likes music with a sense of humour. Don't understand the comment about lack of respect. There is a world of music out there that I listen to that includes Music Hall artists like Marie Lloyd, George Formby, Gracie Fields and Harry Champion. Fascinating Aida were in the tradition: what's not to like?

There is much posted here - some music that I like and some that I don't and I would expect people to think exactly that of my choices. I've no idea if you'll like what I listened to tonight and am about to post, but it features the best singer I have ever heard, albeit not as much as I would have liked.

All the best, Guy

I knew it was intended for me to love music or else why would there be Shirley Collins records. It must be some kind of divine plan to coincide the great records of Shirley with my formative years. Admittedly the album above is not her at her brilliant best, but still better than most and the Albion band are always great to listen to.

A span of Corigliano's piano compositions from 'Kaleidoscope for two pianos, 1959' to 'Winging it, 2008'. Outstanding pianism by Oppens and Lowenthal shines through a pristine recording.

Very highly recommended.

Arc 'Arcturus' (Ian Boddy & Mark Shreeve)

Possibly my favourite of the 'analogue electro' albums from those artist influenced by Tangerine Dream's 70's music.
