What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Starting off the weekend right:

I must've died and gone to heaven
'Cuz it was a quarter past eleven
On a Saturday in 1999
Right across from where I'm standing
On the dance floor she was landing
It was clear that she was from another time

Dvorak's violin concerto is tricky to get right. It is given a great performance by Dutch violinist Liza Ferschtman, whose direct approach serves the music better than those who attempt to milk its expression for all its worth, which usually makes this concerto to appear as second rate Brahms.

Recording is also first rate.

Jonathan Biss' early disc of Schumann masterworks is like a bottle of cheap rosé: it goes down easily enough if you're not in a critical frame of mind. Others such as Perahia, Uchida, Pollini, Pletnev and even Kempff dig deeper and achieve more.

...not in the mood for cheap rosé. Perahia's 'less is more' mentality, which characterized his playing during the 70s and 80s, makes this one of his irresistible records - up there with his unparalleled Schubert Impromptus.

Cheers,

Yep, I'm looking forward to RIP. I thought Ghettoville was supposed to be out last year and had maybe been shelved, so good to know it'll turn up at last  - thanks!
