What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

First spin of an xmas gift
Oh yes indeed David; this is one beautifully nuanced special suite of music. It takes me far away. I recommend a 'dark room' listening experience for maximum transportation distance.
John.
I'll meet you halfway, I've put Gieseking's 50s recordings of the préludes I & II in the basket. On sound: I'm not interested in sound quality per se, but the beauty of the instrument is half the pleasure so I am partial to good recordings, particularly with piano. And Thibaudet's recorded sound is beautiful. It lacks a bit in the bass (could be the playing), but makes up for it in clarity - it's not often you can hear the effect of the middle pedal so clearly.
EJ,
I have the 80s reissue LP and hope that the CD reissue is better than what I have. The clarity is missing from this record so the whole thing is played like a dream sequence in a fog.
But it's expressive throughout with I can pick up passion and fire out of mostly pastel hued canvas.
THere's something special going on with Geiseking which I can't pin point just yet. When I get an opportunity I will get Tibaudet's Preludes.
Right now I don't have any working CD players so I'm no hurry to get CDs. ( however this week a Sokolov box set arrived~ )
First became interested in this wonderful artist because of the forum. This album is a grower.

I would highly recommend the debut album from this Leeds based seven piece ensemble.
I'm not sure what genre to file this one under. It has elements of dubstep (do not be put off) with jazz like smoky horn sections. Ruby Wood supplies the honeyed, sultry vocals, which she delivers with panache.
IMO an absolute corker.

The US 45rpm Hoffmann mastered issue is superb.
The WG version of the same disc is supposedly even better sounding.
I heard the opposite and therefore spent a liitle extra for the WB Acoustec US version. This is THE best sounding audiophile reissue LP I have bought so far. It is really awesome.

Listening to the 2010 album on youtube. I might dip my toes in...
Any recommendations?

Hi Denis, I love Interpol, and still haven't heard that one.
Start with their first album, one of my favourites from the last ten years, and one I still post here once in a while:
I remember playing 'Stella...' in particular loads when it came out. A brilliant song:
Just put it on.
Thanks Chief,
The stars must be aligned because I moved on to "Turn On the Bright Lights" and was listening to "Stella" when I looked back here

You're welcome, Denis.
I'll leave it to you to figure out what Stella might be about about - I don't often pay much attention to lyrics, but theirs are usually kind of intriguing. More importantly, they do that cool NYC thing pretty well.

Hi kk, I was just saying hi really, as I hadn't spotted your posts lately.
In case you didn't know though, Scuba is Paul Rose, owner of Hotflush Recordings, home of Mount Kimbie, so you just might like Triangulation. It sounds a little like Burial in places, though maybe hasn't the same consistent quality (What has?). Have a listen to 'Latch' and 'So You Think You're Special' if you're curious.
He has a new album out next month, and anything Hotflush is buy on sight for me just now.
