What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

One for Stu... (and for any other modern Prog/PT fans)

You need to listen to a few more bands from Aus?
MAW were/are good.
There are loads of other good bands and solo artists to come from down under.
INXS /Duffo/ Dead Can Dance come to mind.
Stu.

Off the top of my head,
INXS /Duffo/ Dead Can Dance come to mind.
A few classical greats also.
It might be worth starting a thread on bands from down under to get a good list?
Stu.
I thought Men at Work were superb, but my favourite song from Oz was Follow The Yellow Brick Road by Captain Beefheart - sorry wrong Oz, wrong Yellow Brick too. DCD are pretty good. And what about Rolf?
Anyway I have been listening to the last 8 CDs from this
and it is still available in the Amazon for a bargain price, albeit a few dollars more than I paid for it.

Guy,
Great set of albums.
The bandit sellers want to much for it now though.
Another band from New South Wales?
If only Frank was still alive?
Playing this on the black stuff.
Stu.
And to finish...
Andy,
That will help work in your new cartridge for you..
Give it some to shape its self.
Stu.
One of Dans best.

AC/DC
Schubert built his reputation as one of the great romantics on the strength of a few key works, which penetrate the dark depths in the human soul more effectively than any other composer before or since. His last three piano sonatas, last two quartets, the string quintet, fantasias for two and four hands at the piano and the Winterreise song cycle (and to a lesser extent, the "unvollendete" symphony) all compete for some of most intense classical music ever written. On top of that, I think Schubert's music for string quartet is also some of the most accessible written in that format, and a great introduction to this sub-genre.
The Belcea Quartet recorded the great chamber works for strings in 2009, joined by the ABQ's Valentin Erben for the quintet. I first heard these performances on the radio, compared to the Tokyo and Jerusalem quartets. All great performances, but the Belcea stuck in the mind long after that radio show. Having heard these discs now a few times, I add them to the top of the list of performances of these works. My overall preference remains with the Alban Berg Quartett's first studio recordings, in which they audibly gave everything and must have melted the microphones. But the Belceas come close, with a very different, more varied and lyrical approach. The quartet D887 is split across two discs, a minor annoyance.
Highly recommended!
