What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

First spin - three early cantatas, from around the time Bach undertook his famous long walk to visit Buxtehude. Really good music, Bach at his best.

Cheers,

Schwanengesang includes some of Schubert's most beautiful songs, and Goerne is on home ground here: ample grounds for him to show off his huge tonal and dynamic range. Goerne's style hasn't changed much since his last recording of these works (with Brendel), but he has significantly tightened up his interpretation - Christoph Eschenbach is an ideal partner here, a forceful presence in his own way. It's not all good news: Goerne's voice is starting to show signs of aging, his upper middle and high notes characterized by a dryness that wasn't there before. It's still uniquely beautiful, a matter of taste. As of the first second, I was hooked.

A bonus disc is devoted to the D.960 sonata - if Eschenbach can conjure up the same sonorities as he does in the songs, this promises to be quite special.

Hi Debs

This is one album that is definitiely worth tracking down an original vinyl or CD release of depending on your preference. The remaster is not a patch on the original sound.

Hi Jamie,

i've got cd's with far worse remastering than what Page and Marino did, although my Led Zep Physical Graffiti 2xcd set also includes a badly scruffed cd1 which refuses to play out track 1 properly : (

Some exciting news though.... last night i purchased a Phiysical Graffiti 2 x LP album from a dealer on ebay, not sure how old the issue is but they are less than 140g French pressings, and i would guess from the 80's.

It's already posted and on it's way to me right now, so expect to read about me praising it or complaining about it in a few days time ; )

Hey reubs, It's Lone's Ecstasy & Friends from a couple of years ago.

It has a few pointers towards his current sound, but it's mostly made up of the wonky / hip hop / Boards of Canada-influenced sound he started out with, as also heard on the earlier Lemurian. Look up 'Sungrazer Cascade' and 'Karen Loves Kate' for some typically sunkissed loved-up sounds.

Only a couple more weeks to wait for his new album (and Actress's, of course!)

The single ‘Avalanche’ (Released through Flowers In The Dustbin Records on 14th May 2012) is the precursor to the band’s debut album which will be released later this year.

Naah, it's from 2009, iirc. This is the new one:

That's a preview of the whole album, not just one track, in case you're wondering. As Zomby would say, where were u in '92?
