What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I have been guilty lately of not listening to Heinrich Hertz with any degree of frequency lately so instead I'll listen to a close facsimile; the piano music of Henri Herz. Hertz, the German physicist and Herz, the pianist/composer died within 6 years of each other or 1894 and 1888, respectively.

What do you think of it?
I'm awaiting its release in 96/24 HighRes on Qobuz next week.
I had a prelisten and was quite charmed with their playing.

Aleg,
Their opus 1 is brilliant, haven't listened to other works yet. I've been following this group since their highly charged, quicksilver, and sensitive recording of the two Schubert trios, around 2000, which was a revelation after the robust, sunk-in Beaux Arts Trio. Nowadays there is more competition, but the Wanderer seem to share the same musical sensibilities as I do, and to me they instinctively sound right.

Debs,
Brilliant album.
I will dig my three gold disc set out for a play later.

For the follow-up to his wonderful Winterreise, Werner Güra compiled his own cycle - consisting of mostly well known songs. A light tenor singing romantic songs about longing and desire doesn't sounds hugely exciting on paper, but this is an intelligent programme, sung to perfection and with symbiotic support from Christoph Berner, who plays a wonderful sounding, articulate fortepiano with ample tonal and dynamic range (no boxiness here). For his interpretation, Güra is indebted to Ian Bostridge but manages to stay far from the latter's ultra-intense Fischer-Dieskau-like delivery. Less is more.
Cheers,
EJ
Doug, have you heard this album? I'd be interested in what you think. For me, the jury is still out, the pianism is there but it sometimes feels notes fall in the wrong slot. Could be a matter of getting used to - I've tried reading the score but all that gave me was an understanding why the work is considered among the most difficult keyboard works ever written. And they say Ravel himself was only a modestly capable pianist...

Last night Moon's "Turning the Tide" Side 2 led to the Cado Belle album which is one that I keep going back to every few months.. brilliant.. it came out around 1976.. and that led to another album of the same year.. Racing Cars.. "Downtown Tonight."

I believe this is a CD giving much divided opinions.
This shows for example in the fact that magazine Diapason gives it the highest Diapason d'Or award, while the magazine Classica only gives it one star the lowest classification.
I just like it for what it is, enjoyable but not the best I have heard on any of the pieces. But enjoyable nonetheless.

On its first play.
I am glad i didn't go, if it sounded like this?
Another naff Rush recording.
Stu.
Is this just the performance of 'Moving Pictures' and not the rest of the concert?
Is the problem the sound quality, or the performance?
The show I was excellent, but did have 'stadium sound', but not as bad as the 2006 tour though.
I am tempted by the Blu-ray of the whole 2011 show, but it will have to wait a little while until I buy a player.
Jamie,
Its the production and over compressed sound quality.
