What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

EJ, you have perked my curiousity with these Mirare recordings with Ricercar Consort / Philippe Pierlot.  What is your overall take on these recordings?

Doug,

In a field dominated by Gardiner, Koopman, Suzuki, Veldhoven and Kuijken, I'm confident that the Ricercar offer the most polished, best sung, most emotional and most exciting performances - and the least Lutherian! Jokes aside, Pierlot's approach to Bach is more that of the French/ Italian school than the Dutch/Belgian/German/(Japanese) school, and he treats these works as music first, and sacred text second. If you're OK with this, I think you'll LOVE these performances.

Cheers,

EJ

Debs, I spent a bit a time with this one last week as well.  I was spurred on by watching this video which I found very interesting.  Of course, they play to the camera a little but one part where they all switch instruments and start jamming was very funny.  I think it reflects back to a pre-internet age where life was simpler and maybe even more fun.

I actually enjoyed all the videos that go along with the Hall of Famers listed here.

Hi Doug,

Thank you for the link, I’ll have a look at it later : )

Meanwhile, I am very surprised JdP’s EMI complete 17cd box-set has become so expensive on Amazon, now available (from other sellers) from prices starting at £75 ... i have some reservations with the sound quality from this set; while listening to Ludwig van’s Ghost trio, it just don't sound right, Barenboim’s piano is too shrill up the top end and fuddy-duddy in the bass, and the strings sound subdued, one is not able to get close to the music : (

So I tried my 1988 2 x CD box-set of du Pre’s ’Impressions’ (which incidentally is available for a bargain few quid) but on this CD version listening to the same 1970 Abbey Road recording of Op.70 no.1 “Ghost” is a finer difference like a veil has been lifted, purer more natural sound, and one can feel the real passion of the music, and very passionate it is too.

Another fine version of Ghost I like very much is by the Morgenstern Trio, a 2007 recording on the telos music records label.

Will play it later if my mood needs some more spooking : )

Sonata D.960 on disc 2. It would be a shame if this wasn't good, given the excellence of the first disc, but it's brilliant: a personal, slowish and at times almost unbearably sad but ultimately uplifting performance.

One of the best emotion albums of all time.

On vinyl or CD?

If you don't have this? buy it now.

Its so cheap on CD from amazon sellers.

Vinyl costs more.

But, if you can find a good copy?BLOODY GO FOR IT.

Was looking for some Liszt piano works and this was recommended on Arkiv music.  Not sure how she compares to others, but I do enjoy this album.
