What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Another breath of fresh air.  I simply like the style of Claire-Marie Le Guay and this is another very strong disc that attracts me to her.

Shame that they did not make this double vinyl so that you get the three extra tracks that are on the CD version....

Agree yes would have been nice to have been a double but still a nice item to have. I understand that later in the year there will be a DVD/Blu-Ray CD release of the show in Mexico.

Steven Osborne is going mainstream with Ravel, Rachmaninov, Debussy and Beethoven, but finds a lot to say even in well known works. I'm looking forward to a new recording of Beethoven's Für Elise and other bagatelles out next month (the first since Brendel, I believe). Here's hoping he eventually gets around to some of Schumann's meatier works.

I thought it was a bit average to be honest. I will admit I'm not greatly familiar with her material but this wasn't enough to convert me.

Schumann's violin sonatas, given an intense and burnished reading by Gringolts and Laul. I find them occasionally too overbearing and wayward in these relatively sparse works, but there are also moments of pure beauty - especially in the comparatively weak 3rd sonata. Recommended, but not as first or only version of these works, which are among the most under appreciated works in the classical library.

Cheers,

EJ

My first vinyl purchase Ever! On the TT and sounding as good as the day I purchased back in September 1969.

Gets to be a bit muzak at times but pleasant enough background music.
