What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

A bit early for the nocturnes, but I don't think Chopin wrote any matinees...

One more for the memory of Levon Helm (always a candidate as a drummer to my imaginary all time band).

Listening to 3 EP's of The Staves - http://soundcloud.com/the-staves

They are the first band to be produced by Father & Son, Glyn/Ethan Johns. Album due around Sept I think. After completing their current UK tour, they are off to Canada/US to support Bon Iver. Catch them if you can. I'm seeing them on 1 May and can't wait.

Highly proficient, sensitive playing from the brother-and-sister partnership of Gil and Orli Shaham. Even today, the F major Sonata is scantily represented on disc. Its sublime Poco sostenuto centrepiece contains some of the noblest invention Dvorak ever penned and the Shahams do full justice to its eloquence and hushed concentration. Both outer movements also go with a will: the Brahmsian opening Allegro ma non troppo unfolds with dignified lucidity, while the high-spirited Allegro molto finale is playful and virtuosic.
Likewise, the Shahams’ advocacy of the Sonatina – one of the most captivating products of Dvorak’s first American sojourn – has a youthful ardour and nimble assurance that communicate strongly. Apparently, this enchanting creation was the first piece discovered together by the then-teenage duo and their affection for it remains palpable. No grumbles, either, about the Shahams’ expressive way with the equally appealing Four Romantic Pieces. The wistful concluding Larghetto is a delight.

A lovely issue, in sum, excellently recorded (the balance has been beautifully judged by the DG production team). In fact, my only real moan is that there isn’t more of it.'

'An other cup' by Yusef Islam (formally Cat Stevens). Boy is this an excellent album, well recorded with one track having 'infra' bass to die for!
