What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Have a liking for this album as well. Love it's simplicity in it's sound. Did you get the deluxe version?

Hi Ewemon,

No I didn't, or don't think I did !!! What came extra with the deluxe version? Bugger, I wish I knew about it.

You are right about the album's simplicity. The vocals desperately remind me of somebody but I can't think who.

The "Chill" CD. I'll leave the "Party" one for later.

After a while her stuff starts sounding the same but, talk about some ear candy this. More funky stuff included on this album than her earlier ones which I wasn't liking them enough to own her records.

Pretty good sounding vinyl, too. Love her Stevie Wonder cover 'I can't help it'.

The deluxe has some live tracks plus some demos. You can still get it. One track reminds me of Laura Veirs and there is a little Tori Amos phrasing in the vocals sometimes.

Thanks for the reminder. I had to dig out my copy and play it. The story of the Hurricane moves me every time.

Now all the criminals in their coats and their ties
Are free to drink martinis and watch the sun rise
While Rubin sits like Buddha in a ten-foot cell
An innocent man in a living hell
That's the story of the Hurricane

The album - Crown And Treaty has received 4/5 star reviews. Sid Smith was full of high praise in this months Prog Magazine. Tim shows his Robert Fripp chops on Archaeology, with a hint of Tron 'plugin'. The good news is that the band can play this stuff live, as a 6 piece and they are the Dog's . Catch em if you can on tour. I'm seeing them for the 4th time this year in Cambridge on 26 May.

I think there's every chance this album will be in my top 5 this year. Music with ideas & variety aplenty.

This is Ashkenazy's second recording of the Rach concertos. In terms of pianism, he is slightly more robust than in his earlier set with Previn - but Haitink's support is golden and easily makes this set my favorite. One of my all time favorites, in fact.

Goerne sings with a somewhat slower pace than most, but very sensitive.

Like him very much.

On vinyl. Because they were an amazing band and Joe Strummer was a fabulous front man. And...I've got a tree in the Joe Strummer forest on Skye

Well the Clash got me thinking of great old punk bands and I probably haven't played this for 5-10 years. There are some great unexpected tracks on this like Fly Dark Angel and Better Man Than I got a free 12" of Borstal Breakout and If the Kids are United, blows the cobwebs away for sure.

Aleg, I wholeheartedly agree. This series promises to become the Schubert Lieder collection. The original plan called for 8 or 10 CDs, Volume 6 has just appeared.

Even more vinyl fun

Really like this CD. Gavin Clark is one the best singers I've seen perform and such a shame he is not seen on stage much these days. Gavin has worked occasionaly with UNKLE since the demise of Clayhill.

I hadn't really looked at it as a series (I only have 2 of his CDs), but it appears there will be even 12 CDs eventually

Bei harmonia mundi erscheint im Laufe der kommenden Jahre eine Serie von zwölf CDs mit den schönsten Liedern von Franz Schubert, die "Goerne-Schubert-Edition".
