What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Thoroughly enjoying a blast of this.....

This, on vinyl. Side Two is a bit meh but the title track, all 17 glorious minutes of it, must surely be one of the most brilliantly compelling pieces of music ever created. A whole side, and it's still not long enough...

Early sounds

Don Carlos, the only recording of the 5-act version in French. The cavernous sound is a pity, although few opera recordings feature the dynamic range on offer here. The famous duet between Philip and the Grand Inquisitor, two basses, is supremely well done.

Cheers,

From the archives: a couple of sonatas from Barenboim's first Beethoven sonata cycle. Barenboim apparently played these from memory and although he adopted some strange tempi, on the whole this is an energized and spontaneous sounding set. Too closely recorded, but still competitive!

Studio recordings. A reminder of those school days (yes I can just remember!)

The first and last of Schumann's three piano trios, by the italian trio 'Voces Intimae'. Challenge Classics is gradually building a good catalogue of classical music.
