What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Munch,

My cool music days are over.

Now I am all about dead conductors and pianists.

Or live pianists doing bad covers of old music.

Haim, I have only listened to the Smirnova on i-Tunes twice a couple of weeka ago and will make some time to listen more closely to compare sometime.  My initial memory of it though is that thankfully we have two very different players.  They each have a different vision for the works.  Smirnova has a darker vision, a nice sense of voicing (almost like everything is a one big fugue) and bends the musical flow somewhat from time to time (almost more romantic period).  I think Schirmer tends to view Händel with more a joyous, happy outflow and she is very much more stricter or straight with the score (more classical period).  Each have there own unique way with ornamentation and both exploit the virtues of a modern grand very tastefully.  Until I can listen to Smirnova on my main system alongside Schirmer I would currently still have to favour Schirmer but what a nice problem to have in being lucky enough to have both recordings!

Oh yes.

I've got about 5 stacks of records: Beethoven, Schubert, Mahler, Bruckner and Mozart stack.

They are all dead.

Now I am mostly listen to dead conductors and pianists playing dead composer's tunes.
