What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

David is 65 today.

Have a listen to the BBC Radio6music show that was on at midday today on the 6 music site .

Some great live concert moments and some great input from the late great John Peel and a host of others..

Stu.

Yep, It's almost a surprise he's made it to 65 - I'm sure I've read before that he can't even remember making that album.

Other than for the footie, I never listen to my DAB tuner, so would never have known about that programme. Found it online and bookmarked it for some time in the week. Thanks fella.

(PS Your Ian Botham story after my lame Kraftwerk post the other day made me chuckle.)

Great album but I swear that it was on this tour that my eyesight was damaged by Bowie's lighting system.

New 2011 CD Remaster from the discovery box set. These remasters are very good indeed every single album has that little bit more depth to the music. Very happy with this set was wondering if these would have all that loudness wars about them and make them unlistenable but no worries there. The Division Bell is very very good indeed loads more going on, more than I can remember before.

Glass Jar is a cool opener on the later album.

I had a feeling you might know that album, and I expect your man Pharrell's heard at least those lines too, right? Don't know about you, but I didn't get their one from last year though...

Now, Kuedo's recent FACT mix, featuring Carly Simon, Aaliyah, Danny Brown, Sully, Giggs, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, AraabMusik, Drake and more, including a few tracks from his album. This really shouldn't work, but it does.

reubs, I'm guessing you have, but have you heard this one and/or his (stunning) album? Here's his top ten from last year, btw. Must read our posts here.

...Yeah, I love Severant (and am slowly getting into Roly Porter's Aftertime) though I hadn't heard much of their Vex'd stuff at all. A quick google will find a stream of that mix, though not sure if you can still download it.

It has some of a very strange-sounding track that I looked up a while ago on SoundCloud: Hecker's ‘bsf°tyk 5'. Hard to explain, but it sounds like something your ears aren't used to hearing, and gave me a bad headache. There's a review of the album it's from here. Think I'll give that one a miss!

A humorless Don Giovanni. Can it be done? Haitink came a long way in his famous recording with Tom Allen and Carol Vanness, but Riccardo Muti really went all out and came up with an intense, focused performance in which nobody has a good time, and the Don's descent at the end is not spectacle, but unavoidable dread (although it is very spectacular with the chorus coming through much more clearly than usual). The singers, again with Vanness (this time as Elvira) and with a young William Shimell singing a brutish, rough-edged Don Juan off of the cynical Leporello of Sam Ramey are nowhere near as lovely voiced as the famous versions by Giulini or Böhm but fit the approach well. I love this recording, the only blemish is the cavernous sound the EMI engineers came up with.

I haven't spent enough time with the Gang Gang Dance album, but I like the opener and Mind Killa (and the Lee Scratch Perry remix is mental).

The Lone album is a belter too-think he's dropping a new one this year.

You might like Dagger Paths by Forest Swords...

Chateau Revenge

Recommended by David Hepworth as his album find of the year and very good it is too. Track 4 is almost perfect pop. Have a listen.

Excellent news - I'm always up for more Lone, and hadn't heard anything.

Thanks for reminding me about that Forest Swords ep - just looked up the track I know, 'Miarches'. I remember Dagger Paths  featuring in a few end-of-year reviews, only it was out of stock everywhere at the time. Another one I'll have to get.

It reminds me a little of some of this great Balam Acab ep from around the same time that you might know, See Birds:

(Glad I passed on his album though, Wander/Wonder.)

Brahms violin concerto, performed by chamber orchestra. One of the more enigmatic releases of last year: the slightly faster than usual tempo, alert musicianship by Isabelle Faust and the orchestra, the sound quality are very good - but some of the music feels under nourished, particularly in the 3rd movement. Playing at loud volume helps, as it often does.

Cheers,
