What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

An old favourite on vinyl, but when looking for a picture I found there was also a CD version covering two days of the session at Ronnie Scott's released by his widow.  Has anybody heard this and is it worth getting?  Regards

Nicnaim, there was a multi vinyl box set issued about two years ago on Purepleasure I think, (I will check) and it is very very lovely. It contains the two Pepper/Leviev lps and the rest of the sets they played. 'Blues for the Fisherman' is one of my favourite records so I am a little biased! The vinyl sets were released at about £100/120. Then last year, I think, a cd set was issed of the same, 3cd box I think, but only in the US. It cost about £35!  I am asuming it is as good but I honestly don't know. It is usually vinyl for me tho'.

Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symph done an okay job with this,

[although not a patch on the Bolshoi Theatre with Zuraitis.]

But i really like the way the cover art goes so well with my curtains.

I really like that kind of music - and this looks v interesting. Would love to know your thoughts on that disc as I may invest if it's any good.

Cheers

Hi Kevin,

I like this one.  Will give it some more listening time later.  You may also be interested in Stile Antico's "Music for Compline."

Also, I really like the Mosiac Records sets.  I am limited to the CD offerings though.  I have Ahmad Jamal, Louis Armstrong, and Django Reinhardt.  Still getting through them, but the recordings and music are great.

Best regards,

Pat

Pat, thanks for the rec. I've just listened to the previews on "Music for Compline" and the singing sounds wonderful (even through my computer speakers and in 30-second chunks) so I'm going to order it.

I too love the Mosaics. I've got three boxes on vinyl, all Miles (IASW, BBrew and the complete Miles/Gil Evans), would love to get more: the pressing quality and accompanying texts are exemplary. There's a tasty Duke/Ella one I've got my eye on...

Hi Kevin,

Cool.  I hope you enjoy it.  I can imagine that Duke/Ella set will be very good as well!
