What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Now this classic that always reminds me of hot sumer mornings back when it came out.Nice

It's Easter bread. Or in Mark's own words...
"It is the lamb of God, made of bread. On Sicily at easter there is a festival for which the make these breads. I like the way something appears to come out of his head, it makes me think of a fountain of ideas. Also the manner how the eyes are positioned fascinates me. When I saw the picture for the first time I had to laugh, but there's some very tragic about it at the same time."

Charles-Valentin Alkan was a composer and virtuoso pianist from 19th century France. His works are seldom performed and this disc is my first encounter with his music (apparently Marc-André Hamelin has a whole series devoted to the man). It's great fun exploring this very diverse set of miniatures, and the overall impression is one of quality. Vaguely like Liszt, for those looking for a parallel.
Cheers,
EJ

lol. See my two posts at the bottom of this page a couple of weeks back for more. : )
First spin - very impressive, thanks for the tip. Sound quality is a very acceptable mono, with slight congestion/coloring around upper middle octaves and good dynamic range. Much, much better than some of the remasterings in this series!
Cheers,
EJ

If I had words,
To make a day for you
I sing you a morning golden and new
I would make this day
Last for all time
Give you a night
Deep in moonshine
Sorry it's very difficult to imagine Saint-Saens' 3rd symphony without the lyrics
Immediately followed by Mickey Mouse taken to the cleaners...
