What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

A mighty fine boot that, Stu. Have it also. Those dates at EC in '75 were probably the Zep's zenith.

One for Mr Dane:-

Via their website, Archive have a new video out prior to the release of their new album in July.

Rather disturbing lyrics sung very well to a very well shot background.

"Violently" - really not what I was expecting from them.

better still - a London gig.

For its new ultra-budget re-issue of this fantastic set, Sony omitted any kind of booklet or information, save what is printed on the back of the cardboard sleeves. However, based on a few days listening, I think I can say that they did give the set its best sounding outing on CD yet. Highly recommended - if you want one set of the piano concertos, this is it.

Cheers,

A Different Kind of Fix.

Maisky's second recording of the Bach suites for DG caused a lot of consternation when it first came out - and without the support from the critical establishment, these performances seem to have faded into relative obscurity. But this is vintage Maisky: not bothered by convention, he plays these works almost as a series of improvisations, with some mannerisms thrown in for good measure. His tone is gorgeous, the most beautiful cello I have ever heard on record. And he is really good, as well: despite, or thanks to, his creative liberties with the text, at no point do you get the feeling he is bringing down Bach - rather, the opposite.

Cheers,

EJ
