What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Toscanini/NBC:  Sorcerer's Apprentice

Fast paced than Stokowski Disney version above. Toscanini creates a better sense of mounting panic as the mayhem progresses.

This is a cartoon rendition without a cartoon.

Highly entertaining animated version.

First spin - very impressive, thanks for the tip. Sound quality is a very acceptable mono, with slight congestion/coloring around upper middle octaves and good dynamic range. Much, much better than some of the remasterings in this series!

EJ,

That's cool. the vinyl copy I have isn't very good. ( US Angel 80s reissue ). What do you think of his style?

I think he's really good on Debussy.

munch,

Well, the symphonic classical is pretty demanding on my system. ( much more so than most of eletronica stuff I used to play on )

These days, I'm on a discovery stage of classical music or some power pop from the past.

Denis has cost me a few bob with those two new releases.

Music is what its all about at the end of the day.

I am still waiting for my classical cd box set to work through this year?

Its released now on the 23rd of this month.

Its now up to £8.99 on amazon uk.

Getting to know this Scottish pianist through his amazing range of recordings, mostly of obscure music but some mainstream stuff like this one. Between Ashkenazy's streamlined early recording for Decca and Mitiri Alexeev on Virgin (amazing!), Osborne plays these works relatively fast, with the smoothness of the former and some of the weight of the latter. And he has earned his place on the shelf with the magnificent way he captures the currents of sadness and melancholy in the fifth prelude and the way he follows that up with the march-like 6th in a similar basic tempo (he does slow down only with the reintroduction of the main theme).

Cheers,

EJ

Munch,

I've got Klemperer's Tchaikovsky No.6 coming in a mail as I was on a *Pathetique* binge for a while.

I've got his 4th which I actually prefer it over Mravinsky's.

Korallreven, ''An Album by Korallreven". Another one to check Chief if you haven't. Recommended for people who like Lindstrom/Balearic type stuff, or maybe the vibe of Washed Out.  Opener 'As Young As Yesterday' is a bit of a stomper...
