What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Anyway, links:

Frederick Delius (1862-1934)

Violin Concerto

Yehudi Menuhin violin

Double Concerto for violin, Cello and orchestra

Yehudi Menuhin violin

Paul Tortelier cello

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ~ Meredith Davies

Recordings from no.1 Studio Abbey Road, London June 1976

Cello Concerto

Jacqueline du Pré cello

Royal Philharmonic orchestra ~ Sir Malcolm sargent

Recordings from no.1 Studio Abbey Road, London January 1965

My first play of this 18 x CD box set : )

i've jumped strait in on no.6 disc to hear the Jacqueline du Pré cello concerto which is a duplicate piece of what is included on [the composite] disc no.1 of the 17xcd box set of Du Pré Complete EMI Recordings.

So far the sound quality of this violin concerto, performed in 1976 and mastered for cd in 1989, sounds excellent.

The box set is nicely presented in easy to figure out cardboard sleeves, and with a very informative little booklet, this is all set out just how I like it.

But some bad news ...Amazon have increased the price slightly.

Some of the most beautiful art songs ever penned, performed by a soprano and conductor who are both at their best (and on fine form) in this music. Highly recommended.

Sam & Dave were not at all like their more esteemed brother Chas &, but nonetheless produced some pretty fine record way back in the 1960s.

Jamie,

This cover is a bit of an odd bird for the RCA.
Altho, if you take a look at all the Living Stereo covers during the same period there isn't much consistency to their cover designs. But this Rubinstein cover is pretty clean unusual for RCA classical covers.

My old time favourite *flat design* covers are done by Alex Steinweiss.

Thank you Kuma.

I had not heard of Alex Steinweiss, and considering he founded an art form of which I am a huge fan of, namely the album cover, I very grateful for you posting the link. His wikipedia page has some good links too.

I have just put a design portfolio on-line at: http://www.jamielochhead.co.uk/folio1.html in case you are interested. I wish my work were powerful as his though.

On vinyl arrived yesterday from USA. Very interesting to hear GH in the studio Fab cover of Buddy Holly's 'Let it be me' Graham.
