What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Playing cd no.4 of 18 x cd box-set...

[1-4] Florida - suite (rev. & ed. Beecham) ...38:15

[5-27] Brigg Fair ...16:01

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra ~ Richard Hiskox

Recorded  May 1989. Wessex Hall, Poole Arts Centre, Dorset.

[28] Summer Evening ...6:30

[29] La Calinda (Koanga) ...4:05

[30] Air and Dance ...4:53

[31-32] Intermezzo & Serenade (Hassan) ...4:36

Northern Sinfonia of England ~ Richard Hiskox

Recorded September 1985. Newcastle upon Tyne

[33-34] Two Aquarelles ...4:16

Academy of St Martin in the Fields ~ Sir Neville Marriner

Recorded July 1971. Kingsway Hall, London

~<>~

Another Delius disc of delights, Sir Neville takes top honours here (well, if it were a contest and i the judge ; )

but ending with a couple of blissful A+ short pieces by the Academy of St.Martin in the Fields.

Strange how the older recordings from the 70's seem to be trumping the later recordings here - not that the later ones are sand-bagging. La Calinda is extra special imo, beautifully rich and dynamic.

But good moments surface in every piece : )

Can't afford the new box set but I went back to this:

Probably one of the greatest recordings of classical music ever ... Just sublime. I'll dig out my vinyl copy this evening!

Not as immediately great as her first two IMO but still very good in parts on what was only first listen

Her voice and phrasing are immaculate. It's just that some of the songs seemed a little, well, boring. Could just be a dull Thursday morning thing

A very nice mix of instrumental setups, musical styles and periods, staged around the piano ....
