What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Not sure if you'll like this, but here is Allen Stone, also @ KEXP.

I saw him at The Jazz Cafe recently and his energy could have lit up Camden Town.

Hi Stu,

Airbag LP's are warped but have played through once ok. My Gathering LP's are flat and sound great.

Denis

Denis,

My Airbags are also both bent.

LP1 is worse than LP2 .

I played them yesterday, twice each of the four sides.

Its not a surf the high wave but enough to impact on SQ imo.

There is also a horrid hiss crackle on track one side 2

Love the album but its going back and they are going to replace it.

But if yours is the same? its a batch thing and my replacement will be the same??

Going to have a think over the holiday weekend.

For nearly 30 squid i want flat records.

Stu.

I agree. I want a Thomas Dolby "Flat Earth" slab & not the Yorkshire Dales to throw my Ekos everywhere.

After a long and tiring week I am very susceptible to autosuggestions.

So following Kuma's lead with some vinyl first to help me return to the land of the living and some sanity:

I was listening to his Polonaise Op.61 again earlier.
He is good considering how young he is!
I'm pretty impressed since I haven't heard too many living pianists that I like!

And this polished studio recording quality, unlike the Dudamel's Mendelssohn, is just excellent.

Hope DG will release more new titles in vinyl in the future. Would love to see Krystian Zimerman's new releases on vinyl, for instance.

This record finally came all the way from Brazil.

Marisa Monte's Mais. I used to listen to this album quit a lot about 10 years ago. It's got my favourite tune 'Ainda Lembro'. This paper thin vinyl did not disappoint. With vinyl, instruments are better separated and voices are so much more natural than the CD. Like listening to a brand new mix.

Sometimes an album comes along that is so complete and just pushes all my right buttons...And I think, 'Why isn't this everywhere..?'
