What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Bought this for the Dvorak, and it is a wonderful performance, very different from Slava's other recordings of the work - noble, long musical lines and with a quiet tension that slowly builds to the work's climaxes. The Saint-Saens was a very pleasant surprise: I find him generally to be a workmanlike composer, serviceable but not especially memorable (with a couple of exceptions), but especially the last movement of this concerto is full of cello goodness.

Cheers,

EJ

When I was young I would appreciate the re-releases of great albums from a time before I was buying records. A time before I was born even.

Now they re-release great albums from my youth to remind me how old I am. Bastards.
