What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Whats the SQ like?

Do you have any of the original vinyl pressings to compare it with?

Stu.

Hi Stu

Yes I have the original which I bought secondhand which was a very good copy. The sound quality of this 180gm pressing IMO has a lot more body to the music. The original by comparison sounds thin. It has more depth to the music. I hope i have explained what I am hearing to you and it helps. If you are considering buying this then I think it is an improvement on the original. Cd version shocking Thats the original mind not heard the remaster. Come with a poster and mp3 download card.

Légende in E flat

Tasmin Little ~ violin

John Lenehan ~ piano

Recorded April 2003, The Old Market, Hove

Cello Sonata

Moray Welsh ~ cello

Israela Margalit ~ piano

Recorded September 1994, Conway Hall, London

Dance for Harpsichord

Igor Kipnis ~ harpsichord

Recorded August 1975, First Unitarian Church, Westpoint, Virginia

~<>~

Playing disc 8 of 18 x CD box-set.

Ending on a short harpsichord piece which has imho a French flavour more later 20th Century than it’s time, and strange for a dance piece, slightly melancholy but the two and a half minute performance left me wanting it to continue.

Pollini is usually referred to as a classicist, with laser like clarity, poise and articulation as his particular strengths, and a mechanical, unfeeling approach as a weakness. In truth, I have never experienced him in these terms, whether live or on disc. In fact, his clarity and articulation are good but not measurably better than some of his peers and particularly the newer generations. On the other hand, what Pollini does exceptionally well, is to bring out the melodic lines and sense of climax, in nearly everything that he plays. To me he is unsurpassed in this respect - and this is one of his best records for precisely this reason.

Oh yes; Dave Gilmour's first solo album. The big black stuff is calling me.

Got a rarity spinning on the Scottish Gramophone at the moment - Alquin - 'Mountain Queen'.
