What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

EJ,

I haven't quite gotten into Haydn's music yet ( good God. He wrote a LOT! ) but what I love is Harnoncourt's Bach.

I'm digging many of his Bach Telefunken records ( not those awful DMM ones ) sonically and musically. Surprising that the way they play them sound fresh. Sort of a new twist on ancient tunes.

For sure I will pick up his Haydn in the future.

Speaking of HIP conductor how do you rate Hogwood?

I sort of like his Mozart No.25 actually. His orchestra doesn't do *big things* but I like the tight timing and close inner working of musicianship.

Kuma, once you get around to Harnoncourt's Haydn, be sure to go for his recording with the Concertgebouw, they are much bolder than his remakes with his own HIP orchestra.

Can't say the early HIP scene made much of an impression on me at the time, but I am catching up and do find the occasional treasure, incl. Pinnock's Messiah, Gardiner's St Matthew Passion and Monteverdi operas, and Norrington's Mozart operas and Beethoven symphonies. I haven't gotten around to HIP Mozart symphonies, I am not especially fond of the works themselves.

So if you give 8/10 to an "OK" album, what do you give to "Good", Very Good" and "Outstanding" albums?

JN was playing this black stuff on another thread a few days ago.

Nice one Stuart. An old favourite of mine.

I remember seeing them on the OGWT and was hooked.
