What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I have been looking forward to this. Fabulous musicianship, beautiful recording quality, music at its best.

Boulanger's viol has a wonderfully nasal sound, higher pitched than usual. A worthy addition to the Alpha catalogue. The material on this disc partly overlaps with the excellent recording by Bruno Cocset and team, but their approaches and sound are very different.

I'm listening to the Grauniad's exclusive 10-track streaming preview of next week's Can: The Lost Tapes box set. And very very very good it is too.

It's available by clicking here.

Ken,

a truly amazing  recording indeed and for some reason I absolutely love listening to it on a Sunday afternoon. I defy anyone who appreciate gospel music not to be moved by this record. Powerful stuff!

Hi EJ,

Yes, my 24 album collection of AliaVox cd's includes the above Marais box-set too : )

The Tous Les Martins du Monde cd i played earlier was a recent purchase that was only a couple of £.

It plays equally as fantastic in sound quality as my SACD aliavox version.

I also re-watched the film on DVD just the other day, very sad story, box of tissues needed, but fabulous music.

Josef Suk viola

Recorded in Prague. May 1996

Some may find it hard to believe but Josef Suk played the viola even better than violin, and he was the best violinist in the whole world.

While i relax in the bubble bath : )

Ken,

Pieces de viole des Cing Livres 1686, 1701, 1711, 1717, 1725

Amazon have it for £32.59, (or a little less less via the other sellers). Link ~

Actually, i don't have this 5 x CD box-set in my collection...

The one i have is Marais - Suitte d'un Gout Etranger (Suite in a Foreign Style) 3 x CD set - which uses more or less the same cover-art!

Anyway, just put my order in via Amazon : )

EJ,

thanks for saying about this set, it puzzled me for a while when you said, five discs(?) ...but i'm all sorted now! : )

book IV, 1717 is the duplicate...

but the 5 cd set is worth buying if the Sainte Colombe with Kuijken are included,

and is good having 5 Marais books together : )

Erroll Garner: Contrasts

Now how come noone would do a reissue on this wonderful '55 album containing the original *Misty*

I sure don't need any more Mile's KOB or Brubeck's 'Time Out'. ;-|

Debs, there is amazing variety on these discs and all of it is played well. But for the Sainte-Colombe you have to look further!

These are recordings you refer to: I have disc 1 of this set (from the 70s), and if I recall correctly you have the other!

Röntgen wrote I believe three concertos for violin, but I am not sure; this disc in any case is presented as 'the violin concertos' and includes two (perhaps the ballad, also included, is considered his third). The first one is a composition of high quality, the second less so. Old fashioned music when it was written, there are traces of Brahms and other romantic and late-classical composers - but especially in the first, Röngen is first and foremost his own man.

David Porcelijn is the champion behind the Röntgen series on CPO and is on to a very good thing here. Performances are persuasive (Ferschtman couldn't have played these works very often in public if at all, but you wouldn't know it from this recording), recording balance is ideal and the cover work is a good fit to the music.

Cheers,

EJ

Great music by an unknown composer, very Mozart-like and well played by Neuburger ...

On the black stuff:

Last night I went to see BBC Concert Orchestra - London on Film @ the Queen Elizabeth Hall, South Bank Centre, London. It was very interesting & entertaining.

The climax of the show included these guy's...

Pete & Jeff can be heard around 1:46:45 on the Radio 3 iPlayer link for the next 7 days...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/e...stra_London_on_Film/

Jeff's Guitar sounded HUGE on his opening Lead Guitar (Substituting Rogers voice) of Love Reign o'er Me, arr Rachel Fuller. I hope Rachel completes orchestartion of Quadrophenia, as this performance showed it would be fabulous.

Note to self: Must see Jeff Beck band ASAP.
