What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

No idea, Debs. It is you and Doug who are the experts on finding golf clubs on CD's art work.

Haim

Looks like he's tearing up his piano. Adds a spin on the smile, doesn't it?

Have finally got round to going through my late father's old records. There wasn't a huge amount there to my tastes (Chris de Burgh anyone) but there are a few gems from when he was a young man.

I just cleaned them and am now enjoying them, first off this lovely thick Decca slab from 1958:

I hope that he doesn't do that when I go to see him play the last 3 schubert sonatas in Bristol in September this year.

"Actually, the first classical recording ever produced on the MA label, this one remained a secret until 1997, when we decided to finally re-release it. It is the first solo piano recording of Chinese pianist Fei Ping Hsu who now lives in NYC, but is quite well known in his own country. Less known is the fact that he survived the Cultural Revolution (during which he worked as a rice farmer and in a factory, transporting heavy metal parts) to continue his career and become a very accomplished pianist."

Have tickets for him in Rotterdam as well. Last year's concert with Schubert's Fantasie and the impromptus was spectacularly good.

How do you like Slava's Dvorak with Karajan? I'm very taken with the EMI recording with him and Giulini.

Very much enjoying this. I'm not bothered by the very distinct stereo imaging and associated "shifting" as some. I think it works pretty well.

But the main thing is the performances and the songs. These are just great.

Looking forward to september. I saw him once in 2009 performing Schubert D935 impromptus and Beethoven Diabelli Variations and very much enjoyed that.

Shame that I missed the concert with music posted on the CD by Haim, I particularly like the D946 pieces.

I only listened to the Tchiakovsky Rokoko Variations on the LP in preparation for Wispelwey in November this year

Stu, that is a fabulous album - my favourite of last year in fact. They are also brilliant live.
