What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

While I am not an unqualified fan of the late Georg Solti's work, he did some marvelous opera work for the gramophone. His greatest hits list includes some famous recordings (Nozze, Zauberflöte, the Ring) but includes, in my view, also the Lohengrin and Tannhäuser from his Wagner series, his Ballo in Maschera with Pavarotti and Richard Strauss' greatest opera, Die Frau ohne Schatten (the woman without a shadow). If I remember correctly, at the time of print this was the most expensive recording, ever.

Surely the zenith of Stipe's mumbling period.

I sure that old Rush fans have opinions, but overall this is pretty good album.

HESPERION XX

Bruce Dickey cornetto

Paolo Grazzi oboe da caccia

Charles Toet trombone

Claude Wassmer basson

Jordi Savall viole de gambe soprano

Christophe Coin voile de gambe altas

Robert Gini viole de gambe tenor

Paolo Pandolfo viole de gambe basse

Recorded in 1986

~<>~

Extremely carefully and passionately played out by this eight man ensemble, in a way most melancholy and slow.

Period instrumentation used, [with exception to the undated trombone copy of a 17 century instrument] all are antiques dating from 1550 for the viole tenor to the most recent viole altus of 1757, perhaps they borrowed them from the museum and needed to play them with the greatest care(?)

Despite the haunting magic, for the most this is lethargic pace, the wind inclusion adds to a requiem feel.

Top class performance, not my favourite version by far, but still very intrigued by the strange cold charm it holds.
