What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

I bet your UK original sounds good. All I could find is poor US Angel reissues but I am going to keep my eyes out for his record.

Lili Kraus: Schubert Piano Sonata No.13 in A Major, D.664

Surprisingly good sounding budget issue. I wasn't expecting much of it but she delivers with articulate note delivery and expressve phrasing to make this tune worthwhile.

The Nash' follow-up to their Brahms sextets disc: the two quintets for strings. On first listen, this is another first rate performance. For these musicians, clearly less is more: their playing sounds effortless and without effects, but the emotion comes pouring out of music, which so often sounds thick and dull. I wonder... would this be the group to tackle the string quartets? I'd love to hear whether they can lift the quartets into the realm of the enjoyable.

Looking forward to hearing their Mozart quintets (on the shelf, for tonight!)

Cheers,

Jan Panenka piano

Jiri Novak violin

Milan Skampa viola

Antonin Kohout cello

Frantisek Posta double bass

That piano recording is a bit fishy, very distant plinky-plonky,

should have cast the microphone out further.

The Trout Quintet time falls short for a whole LP,

so included; the last track on side 2 is...

Quartettsatz in C minor ~

The Smetana Quartet

Jiri Novak violin

Lubomir Kostecky violin

Milan Skampa viola

Antonin Kohout cello

Ah! ...sounds a lot better now horrid piano is gone : )

Kuma,

okay i'll be honest, i exaggerated slightly…

My copy has some unobtrusive surface noise, I think it’s been pre-played many times by a previous owner who loved it.

The recording has an strangely agreeable clipped earthiness but somehow the music is exposed though nicely.

Hope you do find a nice copy,

Dr. Frank N Stein did a good job stitching his hands on : )

Kuma,

I highly recommend this CD, available here for a few pound.

It's seriously good.

One of my most enjoyable piano CD's in my collection : )

I’ve had a good listen to the samples on the hyperion web-site and must admit it really does sound very nice, just a bit too costly for me at this moment but it's on my wish list.

However speaking of the Nash Ensemble, just ordered this;

(at £2 pre-owned copy from the bargain bucket)

Should receive it by the weekend : )

Have a look in the FAQs at the bottom of the page.

How to post pictures.

Debs

Hey Debs, yes so far it's a brilliant set. I grew up with Grumiaux and friends, which always struck me as far too comfortable, missing an edge that is definitely in this music, even the early quintet.

I've only recently started listening to the Nash Ensemble, but very impressed so far with everything I've heard. I'm not sure whether they have a fixed crew or rotate personnel or simply have a large team from which to pull the resources for the varied settings of the works they play, but they've also been around incredibly long, and have been very productive as well, recording for a number of labels at the same time.
