What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

These old hm plus CD's are not only excellent value for money from the pre-owned bargain front, the recordings are near perfect with sound engineering, and for music which ranges from very good indeed to sublime. The bland and boring cover-art doesn’t do them justice, [and not my wonky photo pic above, i hasten to add].
Christie's harpsichord play is very confident, precision responsive and very uplifting to hear, backed up with some very fine clavercin composition from Rameau too : )
Debs
Fireworks with Mullova and Carmignola well tuned into each other in these unknown Vivaldi works. Great stuff, I've had this record since it was issued and it's one of my most regularly played discs.

The new Dead Can Dance album.
So how is it Stu?
David,
I love it.
I am a bit of a DCD Fanboy though.
I wish i was going to see them do it live.
You can listen to the whole album here.
Also pre-order every format under the sun..
Stu.
A couple of 180g Dead Can Dance black stuffs from this set.
The new Dead Can Dance album.
So how is it Stu?
I don't think there is a duff track on the entire album.
Its been a long while though.
Just have a listen - tis completely free!
I so wish other groups start to do this.
All of a sudden October 26th is one hell of a date to look forward to as well :-)
On Vinyl
Off the website:-
If I buy it , it certainly won't be one of those overpriced box sets.
Double Vinyl looks like the best VFM IMO.
What have your ears ever done to you?
Poor things.

Howard,
When you see the cost of postage it wont be
Stu.
New arrival, first spin.
I like everything about this,
great tunes,
the way he plays,
the sound engineering,
and the vinyl quality is fabulous too.
Wish all piano music on LP was this good : )
All this talk of Witold Malcuzynski, or was that Boris Karloff, has me listening to my only album of his. An Angel Records from the early 70's. It was among the first three records I bought as a young lad of 8 or 9. The back cover has a black & white photo with his piercing eyes looking straight through you and two hands together casually griping his cigarette. Malcuzynski was a student of Paderewski. It says 'complete' but that is strange as here that means only 14 waltzes. Generally, we recognize 19 waltzes today not counting the various Fontana versions etc.
However speaking of the Nash Ensemble, just ordered this;
(at £2 pre-owned copy from the bargain bucket)
Should receive it by the weekend : )

Hi Debs,
This caught my attention as I recently was playing this Hyperion release which shares the same two Schumann pieces as your album. The Hyperion is a nice recording but of a certain middle of the road style. I recently played the Phantasiestücke for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 73 with a cellist (and will play it again next Wednesday). Maybe with the Clarinet it takes a different style or mentality but my only question about the performance was to ask where the "Phantasie" element was? It is called Phantasiestücke afterall. A pretty straight reading to my ears but I think if you play it like Schumann marked/scored it they would take you to the asylum too. Schumann was very erratic, even schizophrenic at this stage and it shows in the score his mind. I didn't understand the piece one bit six months ago and it took that long to find my way with it. I believe Martha Argerich understands Schumann...

Just ordered this on vinyl after listening to a few tracks on Youtube.
What a great sounding album, thanks for posting it!
Hi Apye! Glad you like it. Mr Fitzsimmons is wonderful......... His last album Gold In The Shadow is pretty good too. Probably not alround as this one. I don't think there is a duff track on the whole thing. In fact the whole album melds into one perfect picture.
Cheers

Checking this one out on Spotify. I'm impressed --- the comparison to Sufjan Stevens seems apt.
Richter: Schubert Piano Sonata No. 16 in A Minor, D845
This might not be his favourite Schubert as he's recorded this tune only once in Moscow. It's a veiled Melodiya US reissue but I get the gist of what he's doing. Yikes. He kind of reminds me of Sokolov on this. :x
Malcuzynski was a student of Paderewski.
I kind of like Paderewski's Chopin. He might be old school but his stuff got some soul.
His waltzes were quite lyrical and *cute* even but even with the poor recording ( these must have been taken down from 78s ), I can hear enough dynamic contrasts and sounds very vivid.
I remember it was like a time machine but it had enough attitude to avoid becoming just a pretty waltz.
Deb,
Record noise can be annoying but it is what it is. Most of the time my brain gets used to it. Now there are really awful ones from groove damages and abuse. Those I won't bother. ( those will likely to ruin the cartridge )
RCA Victrola LP (p) 1968
I'm glad there at least one fine funeral jig here,
i don't like to get too jolly this time in the morning : )

What really pisses me off is that you have to give all your details etc before you can find out the "real" cost of an item.
Looks like they ain't getting any of my money then.

Seems OK , goes on the maybe pile.
Have tried as you suggest chief churper, bloody frustrating, can't seem to get it to work. Will keep trying, but thanks for your help.
Chief chirper, success at last!
Great 70's jazz/ funk album.
Great on vinyl, lovely open sound.
Superb live album.
