What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)
Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011
With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread. I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.
Anyway, links:

Japanese vinyl.
Impulse buy - first spin of Sophie Pacini in Schumann and Mozart. Will be nice to compare her to Angela Hewitt, whose recording of the Schumann is due for release shortly.

Just ordered this on vinyl after listening to a few tracks on Youtube.
What a great sounding album, thanks for posting it!
Hi Apye! Glad you like it. Mr Fitzsimmons is wonderful......... His last album Gold In The Shadow is pretty good too. Probably not alround as this one. I don't think there is a duff track on the whole thing. In fact the whole album melds into one perfect picture.
Cheers

Checking this one out on Spotify. I'm impressed --- the comparison to Sufjan Stevens seems apt.
My vinyl copy arrived today but will have to wait to play it as my amps are up with Darran at Class A having an overdue service!!
Off the website:-
If I buy it , it certainly won't be one of those overpriced box sets.
Double Vinyl looks like the best VFM IMO.
Howard,
When you see the cost of postage it wont be
Stu.
What really pisses me off is that you have to give all your details etc before you can find out the "real" cost of an item.
Looks like they ain't getting any of my money then.
With you 100% on this, I will not be paying those kind of postal charges either!!

How much is the postage then?
How much 'Tax' do they wallop on it?
What does the rest of the Album sound like?
...can only get to listen to one track - Amnesia,
which imho sounds a bit limp and dull not in the same class as their earlier stuff.
I think i'm with Howard on this one

I didn't get to find out what the extras were.
So if someone could provide details please.
Fine relaxing music prior to the footie.
Hodges had such a sweet tone; he has to be my favourite sax-player.

Fine relaxing music during the footie.
After a hard day, nice to chill to the sounds of Marconi Union. Really should be sitting at some beach side bar listening to this one.
RCA , New York [1968] Licensed by Harmonia Mundi, Germany
All instrumental: lute, descant viol, two tenor viols, and a bass viol, [no singing] commits this work to a relaxed [and melancholy] state. It has a wonderful emotionally depth of quality that only requires some willingness and focus of the mind to appreciate.
It's fantastic, and superb vinyl pressing too, with having been played a few times over the pass 44 years it does have the slightest pip and click here and there ; )

This is a stunning record. The reviews on the Tchaikovsky are lukewarm and while some of the epic quality may be lost in Frang's heart-on-sleeve, searching performance, I don't think I ever heard the concerto played so seductively (but she doesn't touch Jansen in the finale). I don't know the Nielsen concerto that well, but Frang certainly seems to have a good time investigating all its corners and looking behind the curtains and under the carpet.
Early days, but this may well be a contender for my record of the year.

EJ
Chief chirper, success at last!

...and some of XXYYXX, Purp In Da Drank, and DOLOR.
Featuring a cheeky Amy sample, here's 'Fields' from XXYYXX.
The deft keyboard work of Martin Stadtfeld, beginning and ending with a Toccata).
Bach (D major Toccata BWV 912 and the Kleine Präludien) and Schumann (Bunte Blätter op. 99 / Toccata op. 7)
Ending the day with more beauty. I only wish we had another thunder & lightening storm like during last night's listening session.
Just out a couple of days ago...
Still knee deep in Schubert.
His Piano Sonata D959. This time with Perahia.
On iTunes as my CD-R doesn't work:-
