What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Pat,

Just one of 'Twenty Miles Davis albums' from this box set...

two albums back-to-back on each CD but they sound really fabulous.

Always keep them close to the cd player : )

Amazingly good value too - cost me a tenner I think.

At the moment I'm playing "New Jazz Conceptions" from this one Debs - five peerless albums and a booklet for just £5. Amazing...

They seem to a have a great many good-value jazz packages at the moment.

Aleg, the next two Sonata sets in line for me at the moment were to be Francois-Frederic Guy and Michael Korstick.  It was debatable only as to which one I would pull the plug on first.  Your positive words may be the influential factor despite that I don't know when Guy's volume 3 will be out.   I think Korstick has just released his final disc in Vol. 11 recently?

Hi Doug

The Korstick volume 11 is going to be released tomorow July 3rd on Oehms Classics.

Give them both a listen, at Qobuz you can listen to a preview of both them.

I listened to the Guy set somewhat more, and there is the odd one sonata that is somewhat fast to my taste, so I will listening to the 3 cds before giving any further comment.

Edit:

I just listened to Guy and Korstick side by side, and no competition in my mind, I definitely prefer Guy. A much more controled and delicate tonal balance. I find Korstick much more coarse in his playing much more diving heavy handedly into the keyboard, Not how I like it (I compared no 19 op 49 nr 1).

I also prefer the recording quality of the Zig Zag recording over the Oehms Classics.

So a clear preference on my side.

Lets hear what you think of it

First play:

imo this is normal evening music for relaxation, so wrong time zone for me,

i have to get ready for work in a little while for gawd sake so i don't

want wolfy to put me into chill-our red wine slurp mode.

It's nice though, slow, delicate, easy going... while i wash my hair.

Can't wait for the Schumann to start : >

Hi Kev,

i see that on amazon, and very interested too but....

have been hesitant due to the polarised reviews, the negs say the cd masterings are too poor.

I would expect some tape hiss [which don’t bother me none] and wouldn’t expect them to be top drawer recordings but should I be concerned?
