What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

Posted by: Richard Dane on 29 December 2011

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Hi Kev,

i see that on amazon, and very interested too but....

have been hesitant due to the polarised reviews, the negs say the cd masterings are too poor.

I would expect some tape hiss [which don’t bother me none] and wouldn’t expect them to be top drawer recordings but should I be concerned?

Debs

Debs, to be honest I have all of the albums in this box on LP, so I bought this purely for secondary listening (ie in the study on my old Sony mini-system), in the car etc. At the price - a fiver! - I wasn't expecting perfection and to save me the faff of recording the LPs onto CD it seemed like a good investment.

So, they sound OK to me but I haven't listened to them on the main (eg Naim, Marantz CDP) system - I will do so later today if I get time. I don't think they've been remastered from the master tapes though...

Alboran Trio: MELTEMI

Alboran is the entrance to the Mediterranean, it is the waterway that joins the African and European continents, it is the sea that you enter upon arrival from all the other seas. Africa and Spain overlook this stretch of water, and infuse it with their essence and traditions, initiating something of a new beginning. The Mediterranean unites, mixes, meets, develops and metabolises cultures, sounds, people, religions and traditions. It remains as ever, bewitching; a founding place, an occult source.

Alboran is like the beginning of something that we still don’t know well, the beginning of something that cannot be described with words alone.

Highly Recommended along their second album NEAR GALE.

This is my favourite Rach No.2 but the best thing on this album are those Preludes. Unfortunately this record has a scratch and the replacement reissue doesn't sound good. Thinking ponying up for the Clearaudio reissue.

Haim,

Thank god for air conditioners which are going on 24/7 for a whole week. I used to love this humid and hot weather.

Kuma,

Love your new way of posting album cover art work.

Stu.

Side 1:
1. Drag Ropes (9:52)

Side 2:
1. Storm Corrosion (10:12)

Side 3:
1. Hag (6:28)
2. Happy (4:53)
3. Lock Howl (6:09)

Side 4:
1. Ljudet Innan (10:20)

The music is 'okay' but it doesn't take long to play all four sides.

The double vinyl makes the album seem too short.

Record sides 1 & 2 have a deep piano black shine, very strange, can't see the groves!

My copy also has a slight warp : (

The music imo gets a lot better on side 3, although my disc is flat there is some crackle and pop on sides 3 & 4 which is a shame and annoying, will put them on the RCM and try again later.

Records weights: 145gm, & 135gm [on my kitchen scales]
