Il Campanello di Notte, the Night Bell, is one of Donizetti's silly 1-act comedies: old apothecary has married a young bride, but is prevented from enjoying his wedding night by the repeated visitings of a jealous former suitor. Some truly funny scenes though, and terrific bel canto singing in this 1983 recording.
Cheers,
EJ

Angela Gheorghiu is one of the most instantly recognizable sopranos currently active, at her best in verismo, and the fact that sings 'La Mamma Morta' here should be reason alone for a purchase. The press has made a big deal about the bad marketing and that the reference to Callas is not appropriate... fair enough - Callas was a singing access, with an impressive but hardly beautiful voice, while Gheorghiu is always in control, refined, and a singer first and actress second. They share the ability to project emotions. Her voice has a built in creaminess and sadness (partly, I'm sure, due to her singing slightly below the note), which makes her stand out in Puccini and certain Verdi (her Violetta in La Traviata channels Ileana Cotrubas). Recommended!
Cheers,
EJ
