Florestan,
Do tell. How is the Clearaudio reissue?
I ask cuz, US MSRP is a bit dear at 50USD for a totally unknown origin reissue.
Production information on these newer Clearaudio releases are non existant so I am betting they didn't use the original analogue master.
It may very well be that this Clearaudio is on par with what you hear on your older reissue? The Clearaudio is not without issues but the real draw is Richter's performance. I am not totally enamoured by some areas of the orchestra or piano sound of this recording. The mid and high levels are the weakest but the low levels approach a very nice character that I like. This is typical though of a Steinway DNA but in general the piano sounds like a very well used piano. Right now I can't find the words to describe its unusual character. But for the mid's/highs, even the orchestration thins out and loses it right off as evidenced in an opening crescendo of the concerto so this must be inherent in the recording itself. The record quality itself though is well above average and certainly not the worst Clearaudio I have. Perfectly flat and fairly quite as well. The only comparison I have will be the CD which I will listen to later this weekend to compare if I have time.
Otherwise, I agree with you. The Preludes are a real highlight for me too. Again, not entirely perfect sonically but certainly above average. For the performance alone I'm very pleased with this album but if I already had two copies it would be a hard call whether to spring for a third. I'm guessing the weaknesses in sound quality that I hear will be consistent with older reissues and even in different formats such as CD.
