What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

IT'S GOING BACK!!! Porcupine Tree - Fear...

I've really tried to listen to this band over and over again. I just cannot swallow their stuff. It is such a mix-match of different influences from Rush-KC-Floyd-Asia-Korn- etc.  I've heard of bands developing their own sound and being influenced by others but this is beyond belief. They are ripping people off with their

middle-of the road prog shite. UNBELIEVABLE!!!!

Stick with it man. It took a year and going to see them do it live before it grew on me.

Try these.

Easy to like.

If you like the Floyd ?

You will love this one.

Then try this album. Speak by No man.

Stu,

Love you to bits and I respect your taste/knowledge in music but this one really sucks: Remember PFM back in the 70's? Poor man's KC? Same crap, different era! I even watched some videos thinking maybe their other stuff is a bit more engaging. No luck...  This one is going back.

Hi Tony,

my first PT album was Fear of a Blank Planet, and didn't take to it either, and i find PT albums can differ a lot in how much i like them, although now i don't dislike FoaBP as much as i did at first, and there is to my taste only one PT album i really can't get on with [we lost the skyline] ...mainly because of someone gobshouty loud in the audience who sounds like he's lost the plot, but also some serious guitar-twang and vocalist bordom doth set in. This wasn't imo, SW's best day in the office.

So i can understand your objection.

However - Stu is right to suggest Voyage 34 which is a really brill imo too,

so please tweet yourself to a listen before you write off PT completely : )

I feel the same way about 'Fear of a Blank Planet', I got into the band in the late 90's, and love 'Signify' and the few albums after it, but I just can't listen to 'Fear of a Blank Planet'.

Although I like some prog - metal (Tool), I don't like like Steve Wilson's songs in that vein. I love his melodic music though. I also don't like Gavin Wilson's drumming in Porcupine Tree on the last few albums, for me all technique and little feel, and he really murders some of the older tracks live ('Waiting' for instance).

Tony, if you don't like it, send it back, but try a few earlier tracks on YouTube, or even better some of Steven Wilson's recent solo stuff, tracks like 'Collapse to form a Star', or 'Like Dust I have Wiped from My Eye'. 'Voyage 34' is very different again, and worth a try, great driving music.

As for influences, Rush started out being criticised fro sounding too like Led Zeppelin, and if you listen you can always hear a bands influences (apart from The Smiths according to the late great John Peel).
