I'll give Nightcap a spin.
The first disc of 'Nightcap' is excellent, from the 1972 Chautau D'Isaster tapes, a lot of 'Passion Play', but has a lighter feel, closer to 'Thick as a Brick' than the darker 'Passion Play'.
There are a few tracks that didn't make 'Passion Play', one appeared on 'War Child', but sadly the stormer 'Left Right' didn't make the light of day until the release of 'Nightcap', apart from a few live performances from the '73 tour.
I don't care for the second disc of 'Nightcap' though, too much 80's drum machine written music with poor rhythm sections, and the 70's track tend to show why they didn't make the cut.
Interesting reading about the French sessions on the web, Wikipedia and MinistryofInformation (linked from the former), I wonder how much the difficult nature of the studios and illness in the band lead to starting again for 'Passion Play'.
I prefer 'Nightcap' to the album that was finally released. I wonder how many other times a band has made a recording, scrapped it, and then released a possibly inferior version. It might be the case with Kraftwerk's 1983 recordings for the album 'Technopop', which eventually were re-rerecorded and re-written for the newer digital technology for the slight sub par 'Electric Café'. (Just running through the pre-sets on the DX7 according to Hitler on Youtube - if you know the video).
I wonder if there are other artists who may have done this?
