What are you listening to and WHY might anyone be interested? (Vol.VIII)

With 2012 almost upon us, it's time to start a fresh thread.  I've gone back to an earlier thread title because often the "why" is the most interesting part of the post.

Chords,

Lislevand is really outstanding here. If you are really into lute music here is another exceptional disc in terms of playing and sound quality:

On top of the Weiss works here, Eduardo Eguez has also recordings of Bach and Robert de Visee on the same MA Recordings label.

Klemperer leading the Philharmonia Orchestra in recordings from 1960. This Japanes CD release [2010] is superb as a recording, and the music making is of such a calibre that I am at a loss to explain it. Everything is lucid, and myriad details that usually get lost in these works are laid out in performances that are at once sane, and immensely involving. Unfortunately the credits might give the wrong idea by stating somewhat baldly that the orchestra is the Philharmonia! One might think this is a performance on a symphonic scale. It is certainly musically highly significant - anything but routine or conventional - but the scale is intimate with perfect balances between the soloists and the tutti ...

I was put off getting these years ago by a friend, who wrongly as it happens said that I would not get on with this recording!

I have Adolph Busch from 1935, Mogens Woldike from 1950/53, Hans Martin Linde from 1980, and Trevor Pinnock from the same time. Now I have encountered Klemperer's recording, and find it easily becomes my favourite on recordings!

Haim,

thanks, I know it.

Sound quality is excellent, the only problem that Weiss is not my cup of tea.

Please listen 'Belle Homicide' or 'Castagnettes' track then immediately any Weiss...although difference is about 60-80 years, seems a complet another musical empire.

What I love from MA records:

Bruckner 4 from Canada, in a big, broad, traditional but gripping performance under Yannick Nézet-Séguin. I never heard him conduct Bruckner, but on this evidence I'm looking forward to hearing more of it.

Cheers,

I think I stumbled across this one from a recommendation here, but I can't seem to find it. If so, thanks to whoever posted it.

Earlier... Vivaldi's cello sonatas with Jaap ter Linden. First spin, and a very positive surprise!
